Is there a reason for this? Happened to me with dd and now am pg again have started wondering about all these things. With dd I was induced 24 hours after waters broke.

I don't know if there's a definite reason. I've heard that its because baby is ready to come out, but in an awkward position. I've also heard that having a sweep to start things off can cause PROM (both these explanations are from midwives I've spoken to).

Happened to me with DS1 and I reckon it was just that he was ready to come out. I don't know about him being in an awkward position - he came out in the right direction but obviously I don't know how he was lying when the waters went. I didn't have to be induced though - contractions started after about 9 hours.

If it is any consolation, it is quite unusual for it to happen before the contractions start and it didn't happen again with DS2. My waters went 20 minutes before he was born.

It happened with me - it can be a partial rupture. My midwives were positive it wasn't actually waters - I promised them it was (I felt a pop-glug-glug-glug sensation)

When they strapped me to the monitor they could see I was actually contracting although I couldn't feel it. Waters went at 1am, started feeling contractions at 10pm that night.

Thanks. That's all very helpful.

With both my dc my waters went without contractions, first at 38wks 2nd at 36wks, and I don't know why either.

I actually wouldn't mind it happening again. Would give us time to sort out dd and get her to my parents, and I quite liked the calm of knowing we'd be induced the next day. And because of induction I didn't feel guilty about the epidural. But, far less good, dd did show signs of infection and was subjected to a lumber puncture, though no infection ever found.

It happened to me with both Dcs, with ds1 I didn't start contractions until about 30 hours after the waters went, with ds2 the contractions started after the internal exam to check if my waters had indeed broken. Both times it was a small amount and the full waters didn't go until I was ready to push. The mw told me that there are 'fore' and 'hind' waters and that you can have one go which means labour is imminent rather than the one which goes when you're in labour iyswim.

I was told both times that the rule for induction is 48hrs after waters break not 24 but that if it's more than 24 hrs you have to stay in to be monitored and baby has to have antibiotics.

My waters broke at 9.30am on a Wednesday but only started contracting at 2.15am on the Friday. I kept being told the chances of going into labour after x hours, but I ended up in the most ridiculous percentage of women, something like 0.005%. I have no idea why it happened, noone ever gave me any indication it was anything but chance.

yesiamanaturalblue · 30/07/2012 00:09

With dc1 contractions started after 4hrs of both fore and hind waters breaking, both sets went with dc2 and had to be induced after 48 hrs, no contractions, ending in emcs

HypatiaTheProcrastinator · 30/07/2012 00:15

Mine ended in an EMCS too. Sad

Frogstomp2299 · 30/07/2012 00:17

Dont no why either but my waters broke and I was induced 23hra later too. This was with my second, I was 5cm when they induced me but I only felt mild pain. For me the worst pain was when I had too push!

Moominsarescary · 30/07/2012 00:21

This happened to me twice. the first time at 35 weeks, the second at 31 weeks. I went into labour natural within a week both times.

They don't know the reason why it happened.

Moominsarescary · 30/07/2012 00:26

I wasn't induced because of being preterm, I stayed in hospital and was monitored the second time.
