It's just that a lot of people say they knew. I've only been pg once, and I knew. I'm waiting to become pg again and wondered about the other side of the coin, women who were surprised because they most certainly did not know (and I don't mean in a double jinx kind of way with fingers crossed behind your back and all that!). If you genuinely didn't know I'd be interested in your experience!

with 1st 2 i knew. my tummy felt fluttery (not like baby kicks) but something different and i knew instinctively. with dc3 i was very surprised/shocked but still knew. i was on pill, not trying and hardly ever doing the necessary! also when im pg my tummy swells a bit right from the start, a bit like during periods.

helterskelter99 · 27/07/2012 13:58

Completely and I'd had IVF lol

On a serious note 1st time I thought I might be so tested
2nd time despite bfp was positive I was because of how I felt
3rd time only tested as the wine tasted funny
All those ended in a mc

4 round of ivf -2nd time I was convinced I was and wasn't that was the only time.

applepieinthesky · 27/07/2012 15:35

Yes I was completely stunned. We had been ttc our first for nearly a year and I had started to think it would never happen. When I handed the test over to DP I couldn't stop shaking. I had absolutely no symptoms and had got so used to seeing bfn's that I couldn't believe it.

seabuckthorn · 27/07/2012 15:40

1st time I didn't have a clue until I was about 4-5 weeks I think. I felt low had a bloated tummy and had a rotten cold which I thought I caught from children in my class. I was quite grumpy really. I only tested because then I had even more reason to open the bottle of wine and sulk. Needless to say it was positive and I was shocked!
2nd time I knew I was pregnant and the 3rd I knew deep down but couldn't believe my luck tbh!

PeshwariNaan · 27/07/2012 15:46

Yes, I was very surprised. It was only our second month TTC, but the first month I'd had insanely weird and strong symptoms after ovulation - sore nipples, exhaustion, heavy cramps (I usually only have cramps the first day of my period), you name it. I would have put money on my being pregnant that first month - I'd never felt like that in my life before, and it's the first time in my life I'd ever TTCed. But I wasn't.

The month I conceived, I had absolutely NO symptoms, including around ovulation - in fact, because my temp didn't spike, I honestly thought I hadn't ovulated. But I got two strong positives three days before my period was due, and couldn't believe my eyes. Now I'm 15 weeks.

(I think that first month might have been a fertilized egg that was unsuccessful at implanting - which I hear happens to something like 75% of fertilised eggs. The symptoms were just too bizarre.)

panicnotanymore · 27/07/2012 15:55

Yes, very, to the point where I kept looking at the test and thinking 'oh fk oh fk oh fk'. Previous month I'd had reason to believe I might be, but had what I thought was an early miscarriage and then a negative test. Just before my period was due next month someone said to me I needed to pee on a stick because I looked different. I didn't half, I was actually 7 weeks pregnant. The early miscarriage was the loss of a twin, and the negative test is inexplicable.

onemoreforgoodmeasure · 27/07/2012 16:59

Thanks guys, that's interesting, and Panicnot, wow, what a shockShock!

I guess I'm just wondering as I'm ttc and I knew the first time so I'm expecting to know again. And am finding the 2ww a farce as I don't have that "certainty", so was looking for people's experiences where they didn't know and yet were pg, I guess to keep myself a bit more in the game!

Very much so. This is 3rd pg. I'd had terrible nausea for a couple of weeks & knew I had missed a period, but we weren't trying & were using condoms. I actually took a test just to rule it out before I made a doc appointment as I thought I was ill! Honestly thought there was no way I'd be pg & when I saw the test I was shocked!

rogersmellyonthetelly · 27/07/2012 17:57

First time I was gobsmacked even though we were trying, second time I just knew within days of doing the deed. Third time we have ivf and I was floored that it worked first time. I did sort of know third time, but I'd set my mind up that the ivf would fail as a self protection mechanism, so when the test was positive I nearly fell off the loo in amazement.

Lilliana · 27/07/2012 18:02

Nope, after nearly 2 years of POAS and getting -ve it was the month we gave up trying and was convinced that I wasn't. Only tested as was a week late and DH was off on a stag do but really though it was due to being abroad during last AF and that messing me around.

'Oh shit I think we've got a line' I believe I said!

Lilliana · 27/07/2012 18:03

Sorry re read the title - should have been, Nope, I had not clue, not nope I wasn't surprised. I blame baby brain ...

CreepyCrawly · 27/07/2012 18:19

Yes I was surpised. Had been off the Pill for about 4 months, not actively ttc but not preventing it iyswim. My period was late but I didn't really think anything of it as they've always been irregular. We were going to Paris on the Saturday so I did a test on the Thursday to see if I should expect it while were away. BFP. Had no feeling that I was pregnant at that point.

It was nice to have the weekend away to get used to the idea though!

loveschocolate · 27/07/2012 20:25

Like creepycrawly we hadn't been actively trying though I'd come off the pill with the idea that we'd start trying properly in a few months. Had no idea of cycle length and did a first response 3 days before 28 days - negative. Had been worrying about how we'd ever cope with kids as struggling to get up and out for work for a few days and feeling sleep deprived despite about 9 hrs sleep. Felt as is period was due with cramps and lower back pain so no idea why I did a second test at 29 days, just came in from work, did it and was extremely shocked by the positive result.

EarnestDullard · 28/07/2012 08:45

Both times I had symptoms but was still surprised to actually get a BFP. First time we were trying but my periods had been irregular after coming off the pill. Second time I was off the pill again, periods irregular again, but were taking other precautions and (in theory) waiting a month or two before ttc. Neglected to use contraception once though, and that was it Grin We were both quite shocked at first.

cherrypieplum · 28/07/2012 08:51

Very surprised! Hadnt been too careful but also hadn't had too many opportunities to conceive either(!)

Look at the test partway and thought it was negative and then got the shock of my life 20 seconds later!!

mrswee · 28/07/2012 09:35

Yes, both times, even though we'd been trying Hmm
I obviously doubt my abilities to get pregnant! I am hoping not to get that surprise for a third time in my life though! two will be enough for us!

tethersphotofinish · 28/07/2012 09:46

Not as surprised as DP was Grin

onemoreforgoodmeasure · 28/07/2012 11:40

This is so interesting. I knew within a day or two of dtd, it was the strangest thing. By the end of the 2ww, or perhaps into the 3rd week I started to become immensely sleepy, achy boobs, and then got the bfp, etc., but the knowing prior to all that was an interesting experience. I doubted it because a rational part of me thought I couldn't know never having been pg before. I certainly didn't have any common symptoms at that stage, and I wasn't on MN or any site at that time and wasn't aware of the intense ss that can happen. I hadn't researched it or spoken to anyone and only knew to wait for a missed period so I was just waiting. However, within days of dtd (just once that month) I thought "oh, wow". It stopped me in my tracks. I've never had that certainty before or since (appropriately so iyswim!).

I've been pregnant three times (two early losses and now 21 weeks with third). It was comically obvious all three times because I started feeling sick 48 hours after conception! Like clockwork each time. Also went bright pink at the same time. So knew ages before I could do a test. Was hospitalised with hyperemesis by the end of week 5 . . .

shimmy0 · 28/07/2012 12:30

I knew way before the period was due, I had all sorts of sh*t happening to me like hot flushes, major cramping on my left, tender boobs (that are still sore and I'm over 7 weeks). My tooth broke and I started getting massive headaches. This was all happening 1-2 weeks into my cycle.

booksandchoc · 28/07/2012 12:36

Yes because it was our first month TTC, I was prepared for it taking months to happen.
