hi...pregnancy #5 here but never had this happen previously so was just wondering if anyone out there has and can enlighten me.....been for 34 week check up today and for first time there's been glucose detected in my urine sample. MW said prob just a one off...could be due to eating sugary things previous to doing sample but TBH I hadn't...just my normal morning cuppa and a slice of toast. Also nothing out of the (sugary!) ordinary the evening before either. Plus if those things affected the sample then wouldnt it show up every time? My diet hasnt changed at all. Anyway have been told to take sample in for more testing next week to see if glucose still present and then take it from there. Im measuring just slightly over my weeks too (for first time ever also) 35cm instead of 34cm so no great jump but at 31 weeks i was spot on. Also she asked if i had an increased thirst and i have had, but put it down to the recent warmer weather making me more thirsty. Now im worrying myself with the idea that im going to have a whopping sized baby, as well as whatever else could come hand in hand with me possibly having gestational diabetes- tho i know im jumping the gun here!! My previous babies have always been larger than average i suppose; 8lb 130z or around that weight for them all. Anyway im just wondering if other folk out there have been diagnosed with it and just what difference it makes (if any) to the rest of your pregnancy and to labour. Thanks Smile

Hi 4Boyz - does sound like you may have GD. I was diagnosed with GD last time round with DC4, but much earlier at 24 weeks. I would guess if there is glucose next week they will send you for a glucose tolorence test to confirm.

I also had previous big babies (DS1 was 9lb at 37 weeks!) and also had some glucose in urine in previous pregnancies but they just said it was probably just something I had eaten, and never sent me for the proper testing until I got to DC4 Hmm

If you do have it, just means they keep an eye on things more, obviously cut down on sugary/ carb foods. Here they like you to be induced at 38 weeks with GD, but I think it depends on your particular hospital. DC4 turned out to be my smallest baby at 7lb, as a result of all the GD and cutting down alot on what I was eating!

Congratulations on pregnancy no.5 btw - nice to know there are some other mad people around Grin

Thanks 4kids, yes as i waddle around trying to keep up with 4 lively lads i definitely tell myself every day that i must be completely bonkers!!! Worth it tho, who needs peace and quite hey!! Smile TBH i've been thinking for a while that I could have GD, tho with nothing ever showing on my samples i just assumed that the constant thirst was just an annoying symptom of pregnancy for me - like heartburn or something. But i've been suffering with thrush alot too. Almost monthly since week 25 which someone told me was also a symptom of GD - tho ive not read on the info ive found online that it is? Just thinking that as i'll be 35 weeks by the time they test another urine sample then obviously depending on those results then i may not get a definite diagnosis til quite near my due date unless i get speeded thru for any necessary tests? I suppose im just worrying more as ive always had very straightforward, uncomplicated, quick and 'easy' labours. Terrified that my luck has run out so to speak and this one will be a nightmare! Sad
