Overweight and pregnant...how many calories?

Hi I hope someone can help me, I'm approx 4 weeks pregnant and unsure how many calories I should be consuming per day?

I'm currently approx 3 stone overweight and therefore want to limit my weight gain as much as possible whilst making sure I'm eating the right food (which I have read lots about). I know which foods I should and shouldn't eat to be healthy it's just a case of sticking to it and controlling portions.

Any help would be great

I think official guidance is that you only need up to an extra 300kcal a day as a pregnant woman, and that's mostly in the third trimester. Your midwife will be able to advise you when you book in, however :)

At your booking appointment ask if there's a MW specialising in overweight mums-to-be in your area. If so, ask for a referral. If not, talk to your MW, GP or practice nurse about sensible weight loss during pregnancy.

Hi I am the same as you, 3 stone overweight but I am now 20 weeks pregnant. I was told to aim to maintain not lose weight while pregnant, and that she recommended that realistically I should aim to put on about a stone but not to panic if I go over as long as I was eating properly as every pregnancy is different. At 20 weeks I have put on 6lbs so am watching closely what I eat as it doesn't allow much for the 3rd trimester weight gain !!Good Luck !

Hello I was about 3 and a half stone overweight at booking in a bmi of 37? To b fair I put most weight on in first trimester as I was so hungry all the time! I'm now 39 weeks and put a stone and a half so not too bad! I've not been completely healthy mind as I'm not a lover of salad and couldn't face it in pregnancy but I've not snacked on crisps and choc! I've jus not wanted to ! And I deff not eating a lot in last 6-7 weeks as I've not wanted to eat big portions I've his not been able too! But this baby as only just I think dropped which has made eating a large meal difficult but I must admit dropped quite early with my first and Gained a lot but that's y I'm overweigt now.

You need an extra 200 cals per day all the way through your pregnancy, this can increase to 300 in last tri. Depending on your height/weight you should be able to work out your bmr (the amount of cals your body needs to maintain weight, can find calculators online) then just add 200 per day, that should help you maintain your weight over your preg, although easier said than done :)

Slimming world accept pregnant women, so maybe have a look for a local group?
