Anyone else having to drive around in an air con-less car in this heat?

Posted about this yesterday. My car should have air con but conveniently it's broken. I did a 20 min journey in it yesterday and I was so hot (had windows down all the way and didn't start to feel dizzy or anything) but my main concern is the sun was directly on my bump meaning it was very hot when I got to my destination.

I'm 25 weeks - is this something to be concerned about? I reckon I managed to keep my overall body temp down so maybe the concentrated sun on the bump just heated my clothes/skin and inside was still a safe temp...

Any tips on travelling in a hot car? As I said yesterday my mother must have done it and I'm fine ;-)

I don't think there's a risk to the baby if it's not a long journey and you're not feeling symptoms of overheating. Maybe take some cool water with you to sip? And keep the windows open, as you mentioned. The body is good at keeping its core temperature down; even if you feel the sun's heat on your skin, your core temperature will probably remain fairly constant.

Yes, the air con in both my car and DH's car are broken. Windows down and trying to avoid driving as much as poss are my strategies. I can walk most places though this morning with a heavy bag, clothes that are too tight and just about every cat in the neighbourhood needing chased by my dog (on a lead) I was not in a good mood.

I'm sat in an office that was 40 degrees when I entered and has now gone down to 34 degrees but is still sweltering. I'm 19 weeks pregnant.

Yep, only 8 weeks pregnant but my symptoms and nausea are INSANE and I had to get DH to pull over yesterday so I could throw up on the side of the road.

Classy.

Yep, my car doesnt have air con at all, so its all windows down and crazy hair for me while driving.
Its not too bad though, and as long as you regulate your own body temperature, the sun on your bump shouldnt do kiddo any harm.

BoysWillGrow · 24/07/2012 12:31

Yeah, window down an crazy hair for me too, toddler in the back lovin it aswel, 4 days over due now though so, soon be over.

It's gets flippin' hot in cars doesn't it. Am going to avoid from now on unless an emergency. I'm beginning to realise that the crappest summer on record was probably a good thing whilst pregnant. I'm such a moaning Brit Blush

I don't have air-con in my car and I am LOVING the heat!

Before I was pregnant I always suffered with being very cold - I'm 24 weeks and up until now I haven't had the "I'm hot" symptoms that other people I know have had. I still cold on times if I'm honest - even in this heat!

I may change my tune if I get to 38 weeks and the weather is still like this (would be a miracle in November though!).

jenbird · 24/07/2012 22:12

Yep - bloody fan broken. Had to travel on the motorway for 35 mins today and had to open windows after 10 mins as was just too hot!

DorothyGherkins · 24/07/2012 22:16

I drove all the way home from work, muttering to myself how ridiculously hot the car was. Parking up outside my house, I remembered I had air con in th car. So long since it has been this hot, I d forgotten I had it. Used to love having my car with the sun roof, thought that was the height of sophistication.

tabulahrasa · 24/07/2012 22:20

Sad.

susiegrapevine · 24/07/2012 22:26

Well I need sympathy too I have no car am borrowing my mums at the mo which has no air con!! And the electric windows in the front are broken so I can not open them!! Can only use sunroof and open back windows I call it the hot box! Am 36 weeks pregnant! Am buying one of those sunshade things for the front screen tmw so its not so bad when I get in. Good job I started maternity leave!

StateofConfusion · 24/07/2012 22:30

Broken air con here too :( its sooo hot! We had both sun roofs open and all windows, air was moving but its pointless when the air is hot!
