Measuring small at 6weeks?

Had some side pain today and went to the EPU for a scan. It's exactly six weeks today since my last period. When the sonographer scanned me, she said I was measuring a bit small for dates - 2mm CRL. She said that was possible at 5w5d or so; had I got my dates wrong? There was a tiny heartbeat but she said that wasn't important at this stage, more the size.

I know two dates when DH and i had sex this month a week apart (once a while before ovulation and once just after) so I guess it is possible that I conceived a little later than I think.

But is 2mm way too small for those dates or might it be ok? I had a miscarriage about this time in January so I feel concerned the baby has stopped growing and it's all going wrong again.

I've got to go back in two weeks to check if the baby's grown. I feel mental. Anyone?

Read the "am I just thick" etc post further down!

Thanks slightly. My scan was internal so maybe a bit more accurate than the one in that thread.

Try not to worry (easier said than done Smile). I had a scan at about 6 weeks, I can't remember the measurement but I remember being worried it was too small. I'm now 20 weeks and all seems fine .

Measurements at this early stage aren't very reliable in any case - there is a lot of variation. Also, even if you know when you ovulated, it can take a varying amount of time to implant so you could be a bit behind what you thought.

It isn't accurate to 'date' a pregnancy at this stage precisely because the measurements aren't as accurate. Which is one of the reasons for the 12 week scan. I wouldn't worry the measurements can easily be a few days out as can your ovulation estimates and so it works out fine.

TittyBojangles · 20/07/2012 22:27

Sorry, just realised that reads as a little flippant. I didn't mean it to be. And of course you will worry, regardless of what we say on here. Just wanted you to know that the measurements could well be perfectly fine.

You may have had sex on such and such a day but sperm may not have met egg for a few days, esp if you ovulated later than cd14. Theoretically girl sperms last longer than boy ones...Grin

Try not to worry too much. I had several scans before they could even see anything at all in my uterus. When they did, they said that I was exactly 6 weeks, although by my LMP I was nearly 7. I then went for another scan at what I thought was 9+3 (by the previous scan), and I was actually 10+1. As others have said, there is a lot of variation at this stage, and truly, 2 days out is nothing to worry about. I understand your anxiety though, having had miscarriages myself. I'm now 31+2 and all going well Smile. All the best.

Thanks all. I've been feeling less sick today and so I've been convincing myself that symptoms are fading and it's all going wrong.

But I'll try and hold it together till my next scan and be less mad. It seems it's not unheard of for scan dates to measure small early on, so I'll try and be a bit more positive. Thanks for all the comments.

Just for the people who kindly posted on this thread, I wanted to say I am now 9 weeks pregnant. I had a follow up scan a week ago which showed all was growing well. Smile

Hopefully there will be good news at my 12 week scan in three weeks' time. Thank you everyone for the support.

At such an early gestation they're not at all accurate
My due date for ds ranged from 21/1 (by lmp and 12 week scan), 25/1 (by 7 week scan), and 17/1 (15 week scan). He arrived 31/1. 2 days out means nothing - I'm surprised she asked you for such a tiny discrepancy. A week or more I could understand.

serendipity16 · 12/08/2012 10:05

Try not to worry, they saw a heartbeat which is great.
I've had loads of early scans in all my pregnancies, i've been told i was 5 weeks when i knew i was just over 6 weeks and all was fine.
I measured something like 7+1 then a week later 7+4 which worried me but again all was fine.
When i was pregnant last time the nurse doing the scan said that its so easy to measure the baby 7wks one day and then 7+2, 6 days later as the baby can be curled up which means you can't measure the baby properly.
I think seeing a heartbeat is brilliant.
Btw all my early scans were internal scan & in my last pregnancy i had scans everyweek from 4 weeks until 12 weeks...... sometimes the measurements were spot on, other times they were a few days out.

@RubyrooUK - I have just come across this thread and experienced the same thing. I wondered if everything went OK for you? I hope so xx

kittykat7210 · 31/03/2020 14:53

I knew my dates absolutely (I track bbt and know exactly what day I ovulated) and I was measuring over a week behind at 7 weeks (I was nearly 8 weeks measuring 6 1/2 weeks) and if the scan dates were right I’d have got a positive test before I even conceived!

Honestly they are so small at this point the ultrasound technician could very easily not be measuring from the right point/to the right point. At my 12 week scan I measured 3 days ahead despite knowing my dates but baby had caught up which was a good thing!

My point is don’t worry, scans aren’t THAT accurate xx
