I had an early private scan today after cramping/symptoms disappearing. The sonographer asked how far along I am and I said about eight weeks. She then performed the scan and said, 'ooh no, you're earlier than that - about six weeks'.

Started to panic slightly. LMP was around 24 May and only dtd ONCE in June (I think on the 7) so by my calculation that's 8 weeks from LMP, which is how I thought you worked out pregnancy. Yet she was obviously talking about weeks since conception Confused, right?

So how pregnant am I, actually? If they use weeks since conception for the early scans, does that mean I have the wrong date booked for my 12 week scan - is it actually booked when I'm only 10 weeks?! I'm bloody confused and although I tried to clarify, she wasn't particularly friendly or helpful...Confused.

I'm sure a sonographer should talk in weeks since first day of LMP...

HappyCamel · 20/07/2012 16:54

Everyone uses LMP. Either your sonographer was unhelpful or confused given you are so sure of your dates. If at your 12 week scan they decide it's too early they'll just book you in for another one.

IME edds change at 12 week scan as babies are more similar in size then than at any other time. This means they can better estimate your due date, which for me has meant moving it much closer to my edd based on when I KNOW we conceived iykwim

Ok, I guess that two things spring to mind then:

  1. maybe this isn't a viable pregnancy. We saw a heartbeat, but it's just too small, surely. She gave me 6+4. I think I should be nearer 8+0. When I said I was surprised about dates, she just said 'I'd need a calendar to work that out.'

  2. the sperm survived for almost ten days?! That seems so unlikely :(

Bump.

If you've seen a heart beat it is a viable pregnancy. Early scans are at least 5 days +/- and was it internal or external? Internal should be able to get closer early on but if uterus tilted they can't get close enough so will obviously will measure smaller.
You've seen hb - relax!

Outnumbered4to1 · 20/07/2012 18:32

Agree with pp, an early scan is more accurate done internally, if through your abdomen then they can be very inaccurate under 12 weeks.

Relax now that you've seen a heart beat Smile

Subarashii · 20/07/2012 18:45

Oh, thank you - yes, it was external. Internal wasn't suggested. Come to think of it, I didn't really get much value for my money, eh?!

Did the sonographer do any measurements? She would have clicked a button and you would have seen a line on the screen.

If not then it was probably just a guess.

Sperm live for up to 5 days or so I think, so if you take your expected 8+0 and take off 5 days, then 5 days error for it being an early scan as someone said above, then you get to 6+4 - magic!

I'm sure everything's fine.

Subarashii · 20/07/2012 22:54

Yes, she took some measurements.

Thanks for the magical maths :)

I just need to chill out. Que sera, sera and all that.
