Is there something wrong with my scan pic?

Scan yest, they said everything was fine and I was measuring 12w + 6days and heard the heartbeat. When I looked at the photo's when I got home I noticed a gap on the babies head!? I'm panicking that something's wrong, I'll attach the photo if someone tells me how to!?

Do you mean inside the skull?

Rosebud05 · 19/07/2012 14:22

Scan photos have all sorts of dark patches, as they're measuring something very small (at 12 weeks) through flesh and liquid.

I know it's easy to say but, honestly, the sonographer would have noticed a gap in the baby's head.

beginnersluck · 19/07/2012 14:23

I think they would have mentioned it if they had noticed a problem.

thisisyesterday · 19/07/2012 14:24

if anything had been wrong they'd have said. it's normal to see dark patches

nocake · 19/07/2012 14:24

Sonographers are highly qualified so if there was something wrong (at least something so obvious that you'd spot it) you can be sure that they would see it. So, don't worry. If they have told you everything is fine then it is.

Kirsty240287 · 19/07/2012 14:24

The easiest way to describe it without putting the pic up (because I can't figure how to) is like the skull doesn't join and looks like pac man! I know babies are born with the soft spot thing but surely the skin coving it would still come up on the scan?

Sastra · 19/07/2012 14:28

Sounds normal to be honest. I was horrified at the frontal view at 12 weeks - ugly little buggars head on Grin

thisisyesterday · 19/07/2012 14:31

well no, skin doesn't really show up does it? because otherwise you wouldn't see anything!

thisisyesterday · 19/07/2012 14:32

all have a "hole" in the head

Kirsty240287 · 19/07/2012 14:33

Thanks for listening, I'm going to dig out the scans from DD if I can find them! My DP told me to stop being silly which made me want to hit him lol I'm pretty sure they would have said because it looks so obvious to me! I need to relax and enjoy the waves of nausea wash over me lol

Kirsty240287 · 19/07/2012 14:36

lol thisisyesterday I didnt think of that! Ok I'm going to go and relax in the bath with my holey headed child Grin

perplexedpirate · 19/07/2012 14:39

I could be wrong, but I thought that you could only see skin on them thar new fangled 3D scans.
I'm sure your baby is fine OP. The sonographer would have been all over any cranial problems. Try not to worry.

fluffacloud · 19/07/2012 14:41

Hey OP

My DD2s scan picture showed a void too, sonogragher said that she was swallowing and her mouth was open. She looked like a monkey wearing a crash helmet in her 20wk scan Hmm

She's 12wks now and adorable.

If you want to see strange, try having a 4D scan, I did with DD1. With DD2 I saved my money for chocolate nappies!

thisisyesterday · 19/07/2012 14:41

really, am sure all is fine.
but if you're still fretting over it then ask the midwife at your next appointment, no need to worry over something if someone can put your mind at rest :)

I think I've done it!?

Westcountrylovescheese · 19/07/2012 15:25

Aw you can see a nose and possibly an ear... looks similar to my 12 weeks scan and he's now nearly ready to pop and trying to kick his way out!

Take the photo to your next midwife appointment just for your own reassurance, but I would have thought if they had any concerns you'd have been told.

Congratulations!

FlamingGallah · 19/07/2012 15:32

Hi there....don't worry! I work in X-ray and have done hundreds of ultrasounds- you can make anything look like anything at the wrong/right angle! It's just the way she's taken the picture.

if there was an abnormality of some sort, she would have told you.

Congratulations and I hope your next scan pictures are less freaky :)

Kirsty240287 · 19/07/2012 16:25

Aww thanks guys x

OP posts:
MrsReiver · 19/07/2012 17:59

Aww gorgeous! Please don't worry the skull doesn't completely form until after the baby is here. It kind of starts at the back, grows to the front, meets on their forehead (you might be able to feel the join in your own skull, mine meets above my right eye) and then the top finishes developing when the babe is skin side - that's what the fontanelle is. So even if the sonographer did spot a gap in the skull it is perfectly normal.

VivaLeBeaver · 19/07/2012 18:03

I can see what you mean but its so obvious it must be normal. Becoming a sonographer is very intense training and if that wasn't normal there is no way they'd have missed it.

ButtonBoo · 19/07/2012 20:46

Bless you!

Looking at it it looks like an arm up over the head, not a hole. Maybe that's just me Hmm

McPhee · 19/07/2012 20:52

Looks fine to me.

My scan had a slice of Dd stomach missing....all fine though. Sometimes some of the 'waves' don't bounce back properly I was told.

Btw.....I'm guessing a boy Wink

wannabedomesticgoddess · 19/07/2012 20:54

DDs 12 week scan was all round and perfect like a kidney bean.

Then when we got bumps 10 week scan it was all jagged and weird looking. I worked myself into a tizz thinking we would be told there was something wrong at the 20 week scan, but all was fine with baby.

Its just whatever angle they catch baby at!
