Hi,

Has anyone tried Spatone for their anaemia? Are there any side effects like the tablets?

Thank you!!

I used it whilst pg and am taking some now. No side effects, it's great but a darn sight more expensive than iron tabs! Useful to drink with orange juice to help absorb the iron. HTH

oohdaddypig · 18/07/2012 20:29

I used it as I'm v prone to anaemia in pg.

No side effects at all.

Only thing is that I needed Spatone and Floradix AND a tablet nto really up my iron levels. If you are already quite anaemic, I don't think Spatone on its own will do the job. You can also ask for (more expensive to the NHS) iron supplements too which are easier on your stomach - Pregaday. I agreed a dose of Pregaday and Spatone with my GP that did the trick.

I used it- expensive but worth it for me no side effects Grin again had with oj

twizzlestix · 18/07/2012 20:31

I'm currently using it, no nasty smell or after taste. Like pp I drink mine in orange juice. I hate iron tablets but Spatone goes down no problem at all.

princelypurpleparrot · 18/07/2012 20:32

I used it with no side effects BUT it didn't up my iron levels enough so I needed a transfusion after my CS Sad. I think if I'd have improved my diet too it would have been better.

8abyDust · 18/07/2012 20:33

Fab to hear. Is there instructions with it on quantities with the oj?

Are you taking other multi vitamins while taking it?

No side effects.

You want to leave a gap between it and multivitamin as vitamins can interfere with each other absorption. Plus you should take Spatone on an empty stomach,, and a multivitamin on a full one.

If you are very anaemic though Spatone may not be enough. I think one sachet is RDA and two sachets are pregnant RDA.

Like the others have said Spatone is not really strong enough for me. I would have had to have drunk tons of it to get the same dose. Much more pleasant but Lower concentration. Had to resort to tablets which meant constipation central.

oohdaddypig · 18/07/2012 21:03

I'm still struggling with the after affects of the constipation central I suffered - months on (joys of a fissure)

You could ask your midwife about a combination of floradix and spatone and see if starts to up things for a couple of weeks. Also ask about lactulose if you have to take the tablets

jolie33 · 18/07/2012 21:12

My level was 10 at 28 wk bloods, got iron tablets prescribed, yuck, got really constipated with both types, so went & bought spatone, I take 2 sachets a day in fresh orange juice & no side effects,,,,, yippee, will continue to take after baby is born too for couple of months.

MB34 · 18/07/2012 22:14

Sorry to be the party pooper here but I take Spatone and it played havoc with my bowels! I had a letter from the hospital saying my ferritin levels were low so I took 1 sachet twice a day. I suffer anyway with constipation and had to take lactulose, fybogel and a have very high fibre diet but even then I was in terrible pain with wind and bloating (with not much else happening)!

I now only take one sachet every other day (my dr said my iron levels were fine Confused and said although it was a low dose iron supplement, it's still iron and would still make you constipated if you are prone to it!) plus I only need to take lactulose now with a healthy high fibre diet.

I have to say though I have been extremely tired since lowering the dose but in my opinion being tired is more tolerable than being constipated!

Thanks for all your advice...
I have been taking it for a few days and it seems to be ok but have been taking it with orange juice which doesnt really agree with me anyway, does anyone take it with other juices or squash?

You don't have to take it with anything...

Spatone sell one that is premixed with apple juice (and maybe vit c?)
