Baby measuring big - will I give birth to a monster!?

I had a midwife appointment yesterday at 30+5, and she metioned that baby is measuring big but has been since 20 weeks so that is ok. When I got home I noticed that baby measured 34 weeks! My bump is really neat, I am average height, husband is tall but wasn't a big baby.

Do I have to give birth to a toddler sized baby?!

The midwife before this (at 28 weeks) said baby was breech which probably accounted for the bigger measurement but midwife yesterday said she thinks baby is still breech but difficult to tell through my tummy muscles.

I should just stop worrying shoudn't I? I just thought you had to have a growth scan if measuring over 3cm big.

I know they do a growth scan if you are 3cm or more too small, but I don't know about too big. Worth asking though. Also have you had a gestational diabetes test as that can cause bigger babies.

Different babies can have growth spurts at different times in the second and third trimester (that's why 12 weeks is the only time they can accurately predict due date based on size) so it's possible yours has just got there a bit early and growing will slop down a bit from now on...

Thank you, I have had my blood and urine tested every appointment so I guess no diabetes. I have another appointment in 4 weeks so will see how it goes.

I have had a few friends have babies recently and their bump sizes seemed to have no relevance to the size of the baby.

My first seemed measured vv big. I pulled a face and the MW explained he was long. I figured long and skinny was better than short and fat!

With my last pregnancy I measured big all the way through. Always measured 3 or 4 weeks ahead. DD3 was born on her due date and weighed 9lb. So a good weight but by no means a monster Smile. Although I'm only 5ft1 but dh is 6ft2 and was 12lb at birth!

Big babies run in our family though. Had twins 1st and they were both 6lb2 and over 5 weeks early. My brother was 11lb and I was 7lb7 at 4 weeks premature. My poor wee mum is only 4ft11 Grin

I've seen people with really neat bumps have 10lb babies and other people who are huge and have 6lb babies. Think it just depends where the baby is hiding and how much fluid etc you have. If you are tall then the bump can be neater too whereas if you're small like me you can end up huge from about 8weeks as there's no way to go but out

I was told "ooh its a big one" just before being wheeled into the delivery room - good job I was contracting fast or I may have hit someone, but seriously, just be glad baby is growing and developing well. I ended up giving birth to 10 lb 5 1/2 oz girl, but she wasn't fat, but tall, dh had to go home and fetch the next size baby gro's as those I had curled her toes up! It wasn't too bad either, managed just with gas and air and focused pushing. Plesae don't worry too much as the stress will not help you, and good luck.

I measured big with both dc1 and dc2. I had growth scans at 30something weeks which confirmed they were big. Ds1 was 9lb 15.5oz at 2wks over due and ds2 was 9lb 14.5oz on his due date. Dh and I aren't tall either! Ironically ds1 is now one of the smallest in his class and ds2 is very average!

late growth scans here with DD and they predicted 9lb - 10lb.

She was 7lb 5 oz.

Late scans are very innaccurate!

thezoobmeister · 18/07/2012 21:26

From what I've read, bump measurements and scans are both incredibly inaccurate at predicting the baby's size.

And apparently if you have a full bladder that can make the measurement appear up to 3cms bigger!

ginmakesitallok · 18/07/2012 21:30

Last preg I measured big all the way through and mw actually used the word "monster" at one point. DD2 was 6lb 4oz

Flisspaps · 18/07/2012 21:44

I measured 2-3cm over from about 28w. No GD.

DS was expected to be 9.5 - 10.5lb

11lb 7oz Hmm

morecoffeemorecoffee · 18/07/2012 21:58

wow flissflaps !!!! That is quite impressive! Were you overdue?

rogersmellyonthetelly · 19/07/2012 10:27

I was told at 38 weeks that dd was big, and to expect 9lb plus. I was sceptical as ds was just shy of 8lb and I couldn't breathe properly at 38 weeks with him, I didn't have that difficulty with dd, sure enough she was a little squirt at 6lb12!

Stinkyminkymoo · 19/07/2012 11:00

I had the same with my MW at my last appt which was on a Friday. I was 35 + 2 and she said I was measuring 37. Got a scan the following Monday and consultant measured and scanned and said all was fine and was only measuring about 1cm over.

I think it is because I'd had a big lunch before seeing MW.

I'm not worried, there are many factors to take into account including the amount of fluid so it can't be that accurate. Smile

what the others have said. DS measured big, he was 9lb 6, but he was very long. He's still tall. Once the shoulders are out, it doesn't matter how long they are:)
