I won't see the midwife until I'm 12 weeks and that's just the initial appointment- is this ok? Bit nervous

Im currently almost 8 weeks and I saw my doctor 2 weeks ago about getting an appointment with the midwife. I'm going to America for just over 2 weeks next week (gave Dr dates) so I'm going to be almost 12 weeks before I see the midwife for my first appointmnent. That is assuming I get a letter when I'm away as I haven't heard anything yet!

Am I worrying unnecessarily? This is my first pg so I don't really know what should be happening with regard to appointments and timescales but I thought 12 weeks was a significant time.

You'll miss the NT scan which tests for Downs (if your area does them, not all do). I think its 13+6 this needs to be done by. However they can do a blood test at 15-16 weeks like they used to before NT scans.

It depends if you want early scan and tests. We moved house when I was expecting my second so I didn't book in until 15 weeks. Is not a problem particularly.

Won't you be 10 weeks though when you come back, you're 7 weeks now and will be away for just over a fortnight. Not sure where you get that you won't see her till 12 weeks???

Can you ring the antenatal clinic at the hospital up tomorrow and ask them about booking in for the NT scan. Its just if the comm m/w doesn't book the scan till she's seen you then you'll be even longer after you come back. But if you get the appt booked for the week you come back you should be OK.

There's nothing else really you need to worry about at this stage. Take your folic acid, be aware of what foods to avoid, medication to avoid and have a nice holiday.

The booking appt is done at 12 weeks here. MW won't see you or give you the prescription exemption card until then.

GP refers for the scan. I'm a bit confused over what happens this time as I'm not sure about dates (4 week leeway!) but as I know it was like this last time I'm not so worried.

Ours doesn't do nuchal scan either.

At my surgery they ask you to have your booking appointment at 8 weeks so you can have your dating scan booked in for around 12 weeks. (10-13 weeks)

You could always book in for a private scan if you can afford it, if you'd like to have reassurance before you go.
