How much weight did you put on in your 3rd trimester?

I'm at the beginning of my third trimester and know the baby is set to triple his size - and I was wondering how much weight other women put on in their final trimester.

Seems to me there's no rhyme or reason to early weight loss / gain, but was wondering if there was perhaps a reasonable range of weight to expect in this trimester only?

I think they say 1-2 lbs a week at that stage, so maybe a stone/ stone and a half.

Just don't do what I did and think I'm fat anyway so it's a good excuse to pig out Blush

Easily a stone in the last 8 weeks. I put on 3 and a half stone altogether.

AllIWant85 · 11/07/2012 00:31

I think the guidelines say you should be gaining 1lb per week in the 3rd trimester but everyone is so different it can vary loads.

I've put on 8lbs so far in the third trimester and I have just over a week left. A friend of mine put on 2 and a half stone in her third trimester but she had GD and alot of water retention.

I think the main thing is to make sure you are eating healthily, drinking enough fluids and exercising where possible.

I am weird- I always put on all my weight in the second trimester, so

started at 10st 3lbs
End of 1st trimester I was 10st as felt absolutely terrible/ could barely eat
Then gained 2 st in second trimester (ate, ate ate- was so hungry all the time and craved sweets)
Still 12st with 3 weeks to go, so no gain in 3rd trimester as now cant eat much at a time (esp in the evening) and so hot so just want to drink water really. I guess the baby weight is replacing the weight I'm losing from "me" as all my scans have shown good growth.

I was the same with my first baby. My Obs said not to worry and everyone's different.

Surprisingly I only put on 9lb in The last 20 weeks which is strange seeing as I had spd and could hardly move and stuffed my face !!! 2 stone in total !!

PollyIndia · 11/07/2012 09:04

I seem to have put on nearly a stone and a half in the second tri. I was 8 stone 7 before. So I am now 10 stone. I am guessing I will be 11-12 by the time I have the baby. I know it's all normal, but it does feel a bit Shock

TruthSweet · 11/07/2012 10:11

I've still not put on any weight after an initial 1 st loss, well I put on a few pounds and then the next time I step on the scales I am back down to the original weight again Confused. I am 30 weeks and it's baby no.4. I put on 17lbs with DD1 (had SPD so didn't move much!), 4lbs gain with DD2, and 4lbs loss with DD3 (was 4lbs under my pre-preg weight when I was full term and DD3 was 8lb 10oz!) so I don't gain much usually.

I am a size 18 normally though so it's not like I'm an 8!

Babieseverywhere · 11/07/2012 10:19

I have put on 4.5lbs in the last 3 weeks at 36 weeks pregnant and expect to put some more on over the next four weeks. But I have plenty of padding anyway being a size 16/18.

Benaberry · 11/07/2012 14:05

I didn't put on anything until about 26 weeks, since then (now 37+2) I've put on about 13lb, according to the midwife when I got weighed again by her last week.

But like some others, with a high BMI I had plenty to lose from elsewhere during the process, and it helps that all I really fancy at the moment (same as first trimester) is really simple nursery food like ham salad sandwiches, green veg and the only cold thing I can drink that doesn't bring on raging heartburn is weak orange squash! Baby on course to be a good size, similar to DS1 who was 9lb when he arrived on his due date.

I think the honest answer is everyone's different, but I do remember seeing somewhere that normal range is c.1-2lb/week at this point.

celebmum · 11/07/2012 14:36

I'm 26wks and have soft put on 7lb exactly.. So not a huge amount. I put on 1st 3lb in my previous pregnancy but lost most of that by the time DS was 3month old.
Prepregnancy I weighed 11st.

Naisy · 12/07/2012 10:07

Thanks. I've only put 2 kgs so far at 28 weeks, but I'm counting it as six as I was 4kgs over my normal weight of 68kgs when I found out I was pregant and then dropped back to my 'normal' weight before starting to gain around the 20 week mark.

Would be delighted to keep to the half kilo / pound a week guidance! Smile

I'm 32 weeks and have put on 8kg over the 1st and 2nd trimesters but was getting concerned as my weight gain seems to have stopped over the last 6 weeks and I have stayed the same. My pre-pregnancy BMI was just under 20 so I wasn't v big to start with. Just checked with the GP at my routine appointment and he said weight gain is not an accurate way to measure fetal growth and that my fundal height is correct for dates so I can stop worrying about it now Smile

EarnestDullard · 12/07/2012 20:29

In my first pregnancy I gained nothing in the first trimester, about 19lbs in the 2nd and 23lbs in the 3rd. This time around I've gained the same amount so far (am 27w now) but I started off about 8lbs heavier. Like you OP, I'd be happy to stick to about 1lb/week for the remaining weeks. First time around I was definitely overeating due to boredom/fed-upness at the end, and couldn't exercise due to back pain. I'm hoping to avoid that this time as I've got 2yo DD to chase round after!

Cheekychops84 · 13/07/2012 09:00

Has Anyones thighs and bum got bigger? I'm sure mine have ? It's so weird as the baby is not in my leg or arse??? Plus I'm finding it hard to walk anywhere now jus feels like my bump is stretching and hurts and makes me feel sick :( I seriously need this baby out !

TruthSweet · 13/07/2012 09:49

Thighs and bum getting bigger is just the extra fat laid down for breastfeeding (I think the 'average' weight gain just for fat stores is 7lbs) so it's nothing to worry about.

ItsMyLastOne · 13/07/2012 10:10

I don't know exactly when I put all the weight on but I was 8 stone 5lb pre pregnancy with DC1, 9 stone 7lb at 16 weeks and 12 stone at 40 weeks.

This time I was 9 stone 3lb I think ore pregnancy and am 9stone 8lb at 19+ weeks so I'm expecting it to all pile on later this time.

Just breast feed and go for walks and most will come off quickly afterwards!

Cheekychops84 · 13/07/2012 11:23

I was 14 stone 5 lbs pre preg Blush and am
Now 16 stone double Blush

whatsoever · 13/07/2012 16:44

I'm 28 weeks and have put on about 1 stone 3 lbs so far, about a stone of that in the 2nd trimester. My bump is pretty big but my thighs and arse are hippo like - I've always been pear shaped but my thighs rub together when I walk now which feels pretty grim.

If I put on 1-2lb a week now as a few folk have suggested is the norm, I may need an extra large bed at the hospital....

Please god let me be able to breastfeed ok to zap some of my fat stores!

Clarella · 13/07/2012 18:39

I've put two or 3 inches or more on thighs and bum, and quite quickly, at around 9 weeks. (now 20+4) Find it makes me stick my rump out when walk and had to focus on tucking my tail bone down or get a sore lower back - its really hard cos the fat gets in the way! I m quite petite though and only 9 stone 5 but the extra almost stone I've put on seems all there! Makes me waddle. (and wobble)
