Bleeding in very early pregnancy - any hope?

Sorry I'm not sure where would be the best place to post.

I had a very faint line on my pregnancy test on Friday, woke up yesterday morning and had a tiny bit of brown blood. I'd heard this was common so didn't think much of it. We had sex last night and there was pinkish blood when I wiped afterwards. I didn't bleed during the night but I've been bleeding all day since I got up at 5am. It's quite thin watery blood rather than bright red period type blood, hardly anything on the pad I've been wearing but just there when I wipe all day. I've had a bit of very mild pain quite high up earlier but no cramps.

Is there any chance I'm not having/going to have a mc? I read that bleeding is common but I assumed if everything was ok it would have stopped by now.

How far do you think you are?

Bleeding is very common and all pg are different. I've bled in four of my five pg. 2 have been fine, 2 I mc.

I think you should call your early pregnancy unit in the morning and see what they advise. Depending on your dates you might be able to go in for a scan or an internal examination to see if they can find a heart beat if you are very early.

I know it's easy to say, but try to relax, take it easy and fingers crossed all is well.

Let us know how you get on.
Al the best

Hi seven77 I have also had some spotting when I wipe and also some brown discharge. Both my GP and EPU have reassured me that this does happen to some women in early pregnancy. I went to see my GP when it happened and she referred my to the EPU. I know how worrying it is and there is nothing that anyone can say that can put your mind at ease. I would contact your GP and/or EPU tomorrow. Hope you are ok.

I had some spotting on and off in the early days of my pregnancy (at about 5 weeks) and some minor cramping.Like you nothing on the pad but there when I wiped.

I can't remember how long it lasted (DS is now 20 months old :)) but it was more than a few days. Just wanted to post to say don't panic, it might all be fine. Hope you can get some reassurance from your GP/EPU soon.

Thanks, I think I'm 6 weeks. I'll call GP in the morning.

I had the same at 5 weeks. A mix of brown and pink discharge, not very heavy and no cramping whatsoever. It went in for about 4 days and then stopped.

I went on to have a healthy DS and epu told me its quite common.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 08/07/2012 21:53

If I were you I wouldn't call your gp as they'll only refer you to the epu.

If you call the hospital switchboard, they'll be able to put through to the epu or give you their number. Deal with them directly if you can. You'll get a quicker answer.

And also at 6 weeks you shouldn't have to have an internal examination.

Good luck x

Very common to bleed after sex, often dislodging old blood. call EPU and see if they will scan you. Sometime you can see a HB this early although scan could be a but early to be conclusive. Normally I've had internal scans at 6 weeks as more accurate. You could be lucky though and get an abdominal one. Good luck. It doesn't always mean the worst and the absence of cramps is positive.

abigboydidit · 09/07/2012 08:56

Yes - I'd definitely say there's hope.

1st pregnancy - brownish blood week 7 ish (and not very much at that) - had early scan and was a MC. No growth from 5 weeks.
2nd pregnancy - early scan, all fine. That weekend had brownish blood and fresh red blood. Lots more than 1st time. 2nd scan, all fine and DS now 14months almost.
3rd pregnancy - brown and fresh blood weeks 5-7. Not huge quantities but fairly constant. Early scan showed heartbeat and everything growing normally. 12 week scan today.

Good luck and don't give up x

wellieboots · 09/07/2012 10:19

Yes, there's definitely hope! With this pg, I had some brown and some red bleeding from 5-6 weeks, all fine and now coming up for 24 weeks. Last one no bleeding and I had an mmc at 13 weeks. So bleeding is not always something to be concerned about. But I know it's scary. Speak to your epu and see what they can do at this stage, and take care xx

seven77 · 09/07/2012 10:21

I phoned EPU, they told me to phone my local surgery. The nurse I spoke to said there's no point having an appointment and all I can do is wait a couple of days, and the head nurse will phone me later. She said I need to rest and let someone look after me, I'm at home with the 2 DCs and DH is stuck at work :(

Thanks for the reassurance though. I tested first thing this morning and the line was noticeably darker than when I tested on Friday. Still bleeding but still no cramps. I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

What is the surgery going to do?
And what do you have to wait for a couple of days for? For you to stop bleeding or it get worse?

When I mc the 2nd time, and bleeding in my second pg, I had to argue for treatment. It makes me really cross.

Mc and bleeding are an everyday occurance to people who work on maternity, but for yourself it's so worrying. And sometimes I think some maternity services can be very unhelpful and blasé about things.

When the head nurse rings you, I would insist on coming in for either blood tests or a scan. It's not a waste of time or expense for anybody and it's important to you.

When I was bleeding in my last pg, no one would see me. I was told to wait ten days and to phone if the bleeding got worse. I wasn't happy with that so went to a and e. was referred straight to ultrasound where they found a huge blood clot next to the sac. I was signed off work and told to rest and had to go back every week. Eventually the clot was absorbed and I have a healthy baby. But sometimes you have to be quite strong willed when it comes to drs etc.

Good luck

I'm sorry to hear about this.

I am one of the positive stories. With DC1 I had very heavy bleeding everyday from before I conceived till 7 weeks, then lighter bleeding on/off till 14/15 weeks. She came out fine!
I'm 19 weeks with DC2 and had bleeding like a period from 3-7 weeks I think, then more bleeding on/off for another 3 or 4 weeks. I'm most definitely still pg and feeling big kicks now, so hopefully all will be fine again this time.

Only time will tell for you, but it is possible to have a healthy baby after lots of bleeding.

I'll be thinking of you.

sammyleh · 09/07/2012 15:57

There is hope hun... I bled for 5 days at about 6/7 weeks. It was a dark blood which eventually just faded out. My surgery told me to 'wait and see' which annoyed me but I waited and saw that it wasn't serious, but that's not always the case for other ladies. Look out for bright red blood and if it continues and your cramps get heavier, take immediate action... this is what I was told. I hope everything ok, relaxing and resting is the best thing you can do for yourself right now xx

seven77 · 09/07/2012 16:40

Thanks for the replies. I spoke to the head nurse, she told me to phone her once the bleeding starts to subside/stops, then they'll do another pregnancy test. If its positive she'll then refer me for an early scan to check if all is ok. If the bleeding doesn't stop I need to phone her on Thursday anyway.

sammyleh I've had no cramps at all, and the high mild pain I described yesterday didn't last long.
