babybay bedside cot - question about safety

I am expecting a baby end of July and have bought a second hand babybay bedside cot. we have just set it up with our bed and there is a gap of about 3 inches between the cot and the bed's mattress. It can be filled with a pillow or rolled up towel, but can anyone tell me if this is a major health and safety sin? Its my first baby so not sure when babies start to be able to roll over but I think it's a definitely a few months? Any advice from someone who has used one of these cots would be much appreciated. thanks.

A gap that big is not good, even before they learn to roll some shuffle themselves about a bit, so you'll def need to cover the gap somehow, and from quite early on.
Mainly a problem for your dc getting his/her limbs stuck, or wedging themselves into the gap.

HTH! :)
