High Hcg after miscarriage - new pregnancy?

Hello, just wondering if anyone's been through the confusion I'm currently experiencing. Was pregnant end of last year and miscarried 3rd Jan (at 7wks). As no period arrived and I still felt pregnant I contacted my GP and had a blood test - got the results today and the hcg level is very high. I think there are three possibilities - 1 something left inside me from last pregnancy (would have thought unlikely as bled very very heavily), 2 new pregnancy (would be v surprised as we were being 'careful' and using withdrawal), or 3 last pregnancy was twins and I lost one and one is still there (seems unlikely as I think I would be showing by now).

Anyone else been through this. I'm going for a scan tomorrow morning so will of course find out then, but in the meantime I'm going crazy wondering what's going on in there.

Did you not have any medical treatment at the time of the miscarriage? They usually do blood tests then to determine falling hcg levels and therefore eliminate the possibility of an ectopic.

Unlikely to be an ectopic at this point, obviously.

Withdrawal method not necessarily very reliable, so could be pregnant. Also, I've heard of people who lose one twin and remain pregnant with the other.

The only other thing I could possibly imagine is a molar pregnancy, but that's so rare as to almost be worth discounting. That's the only thing I could think of which would contribute to high hcg levels at this stage. I would have thought it's not worth dwelling on this possibility until you've had the scan.

I'm just guessing here. You're just going to have to try and do something relaxing and distracting until you have the scan! Good luck.

No, I was daft and didn't go and see anyone after the miscarriage. Felt that nature had taken its course and so was just waiting for body to get back to normal. Wish I'd gone now of course!
You are certainly right about trying to do something relaxing and distracting until the scan! I've just realised that's why I've started this thread, and that's why I'm obsessively reading mumsnet archives - just to pass the time until tomorrow morning really. I should probably have posted a 'looking for support' type thread rather than a practical question... Anyway, wish me luck!

Friend of mine had this and it was retained tissue inside her. Took nearly 4 months for her hcg levels to drop back down.
