A colleague of mines niece had her baby yesterday a much anticipated girl. Only it wasn't a girl it was a boy! The Sonographer had been wrong. Cue emergency clothes buying and re-painting of the nursery. I had never heard of this happening before. Think I will just keep it so I can find out for myself when they ask at my 20 week scan!

My friend is a midwife and said it happens surprisingly often. I don't think there's any mistaking my little boy's bits I saw on the screen though Wink I was really shocked how clear it was!

CowgirlintheSand · 06/07/2012 13:41

I've been told this baby is a girl but part of me is definitely thinking 'it could still be a boy'... I'm thinking it's probably about 90% accurate? Luckily I don't mind either way.

TimeWasting · 06/07/2012 13:45

Apparently they're more likely to get it wrong that they think its a girl and it's actually a boy than the other way round.
I certainly kept a boy's name in mind just in case.

TimeForCake · 06/07/2012 13:52

I can beat that. I had just given birth and the mw announced I had a little girl. DS then proceeded to wee all over her just to make the point he was not a girl! Grin I have no idea how you can get that wrong! Maybe I will ask DH to tell what we have this time round.

silvachick · 06/07/2012 13:59

lol at timeforcake it must have been a long and difficult labour for her!

Yes, it was certainly that!!

Brenau · 06/07/2012 14:44

My parents were told I was going to be a boy and they ended up with the girliest ballerina in the world. Poor dad never got to use the Yankees uniform, but I never minded the blue nursery.

Needless to say we aren't finding out! Will have to be a surprise :)

mrsalwaysawake · 06/07/2012 15:02

I always imagine the 'girl' diagnosis to be less reliable than 'boy', as you're looking for the absence of boy's bits, and how can you be so sure they aren't just hiding?!

Wheels79 · 06/07/2012 15:27

My nan was dying and wasn't likely to here to see her first great grandchild so she asked if the sonographer would write it down and put it in an envelope for just her. Well her eyesight was failing so my mum had to read it out. My nan was delighted it would be a girl for my aunt who had three sons. My mum let it slip to me and my Dad. My aunt found out in the hours after my nan died. But we kept it from the parents and my aunt pretended she didn't know. My mum bought dresses etc. You can imagine the shock when a boy was born; my aunt had no difficulty acting surprised. Nevertheless, a dying woman was happy even if it was wrong.

It won't actually kill a baby boy to be dressed in pink y'know Grin

Grin Cake. I do know someone who, 2 weeks after her baby boy's birth, was asked "which is it" by a stranger and she replied "it's a girl". She has no idea why she said that but she couldn't really correct herself!

TimeForCake · 06/07/2012 15:42

Grin minipie. Baby brain gets us all!

Hotcupofteaplease · 06/07/2012 16:21

Same happened to me; we were told girl at the 20 week scan and a beautiful boy arrived another 18 weeks later... he had some lovely dresses to wear Wink
Pregnant with DC2 now and once again apparently I'm having a girl... I'll believe it when I see it Grin

CowgirlintheSand · 06/07/2012 16:24

Hotcupotea - just out of interest Blush did they zoom in on the 'bits' (sorry) and show you the three lines (indicating girl)? Or did they just say they couldn't see a willy?

Spice17 · 06/07/2012 16:29

Oh God, oh God, oh God!

I have such a paranoia that mine is wrong (supposedly a girl)

Not that I'd hate to have a boy but have lots of girlie stuff and am really looking forward to meeting her - would be a shocker.

Angelico · 06/07/2012 16:46

We've been told it's a girl and I've asked at every scan. 'She' keeps being coy and hiding her lady bits Confused. I was SURE I was having a boy so I wouldn't be surprised if it still turns out team blue (even though I would prefer a girl for DC1 tbh).

Hotcupofteaplease · 06/07/2012 16:49

Cowgirl the sonographer was quite adamant; I asked her to check again as I was so sure I was carrying a boy... she didn't show me the three lines, just that she could not see any 'boy bits'...
Obviously he hid them well... funny, now that he's three he just loves to get them out Hmm

wimpsneedsleep · 06/07/2012 16:50

Happened to me. We told the sonographer we didn't want to know but at a growth scan she accidentally let slip it was a boy, so that's what we prepared for. A few weeks later dd was born :o

Angelico · 06/07/2012 16:53

Ours showed us the '3 lines' at 20 week scan - is that supposed to be more conclusive?

AnneOfCleavers · 06/07/2012 16:54

I have a friend who was told it was 100% a boy and the sonographer even pointed out all the bits. She was very surprised when her DD was born.

Melindaaa · 06/07/2012 16:55

We paid privately for a sexing scan for my twins. The sonographer was sure one was a oh, and couldn't see any boy parts on the other baby, so was fairly sure it was a girl. To be sure, we were to come back two weeks later to re-check.

A different sonographer two weeks later confirmed one boy and one girl. No boy bits to be seen.

Our twin boys were born about three weeks later!

frankie76 · 06/07/2012 16:57

I got told a boy at the 20 week scan but had to have a later growth scan just before birth and it turned out to be a girl

CowgirlintheSand · 06/07/2012 16:59

Angelico - yes apparently a clear up close view of three white lines is much more conclusive than just not seeing boy bits - as they can easily be hiding!

I'm still not taking the sonographer's word as 100% true though! I think of it as we are probably having a girl...

Cheekychops84 · 06/07/2012 17:09

I've been told this one is third dd the last 2 were correct but I always try to keep it in my mind it may not b 100 % I no dp would b happy if it turned out to b a boy but I'm kinda attached to "her" now iyswim think I would find it hard to bond if that happened Shock

StellaAndFries · 06/07/2012 17:12

My friend at antenatal classes was told she was having a boy at her 20 week scan and had a girl.

AnitaBlake · 07/07/2012 06:27

I remember overhearing a conversation between two girls when I was pg with DD 'shes dead excited cuz she's been told she's got a 60% chance she's having a girl' I've always wondered what she had!
