Shape of bump & gender prediction ??!

Just wondered if there was any truth in the old wives tales of being able to tell your babys gender from the shape of your bump?

I dont really believe in this sort of thing at all but recently so many people have tried to 'predict' the gender of my baby from looking at my bump - its starting to get a little annoying actually! I've been told to stand up, turn around, been looked up and down, asked where I think the weight is being put on etc, etc, all so they can take a best guess at whether Im having a boy or a girl!!

Myself and DH really dont mind what we have, we dont have a preference at all and didnt find out at the 20 weeks scan - we think the surprise will be nice - though it seems to be the first question everyone asks!

So just wondered if anyone has got any experiences of similar or different bump shapes with same/different genders?
And do you actually think there can be any truth in this??

Thanks!

Which shape is supposed to be which gender?

AlanMoore · 05/07/2012 15:18

It's a load of cobblers! I carried both of mine high and all at the front, I have one of each. The thing with these old wives tales is that they're right half the time which can make it seem like there's some truth to it :)

EarnestDullard · 05/07/2012 15:20

Depends where you read Fluffy Grin

It's really just an old wives tale. How you carry depends on your body shape, plus muscle tone, body fat etc. It's fun to guess, but if there was any science in it we wouldn't need gender scans!

abigboydidit · 05/07/2012 15:53

I was all bump and straight out the front. Everyone (and I mean everyone..) told me I was having a girl. They were convinced. I always felt I was having a boy.

I had a gorgeous not so little boy!

In reality, I am a size 8, quite tall and very narrow built (if that makes sense!). There was no where else for the bump to go! In fact, in the early weeks before the bump dropped, it was causing my sternum to split (sore one!) and I had to wear a ridiculous corset thingy!

I still enjoy the fun of guessing but agree is 50/50 chance of getting it right. Still giggle though that absolutely nobody got it right with DS though!

Spice17 · 05/07/2012 16:24

My bump is very high up and lots of people have told me 'that's a girl bump' and she is according to scan bloody hope so all the girlie stuff I have

But this is apparently down to the stomach muscles being better/tighter in first pregnancies, making the bump higher?

Littlecherublegs · 05/07/2012 16:58

I know its a load of tosh!!

I just wondered if people were experiencing the same (annoying) twaddle as me with people 'predicting' the gender!!

I keep being told that if you cant tell you're pregnant from behind and the bump is neat and high, its a boy whereas if the bump is more low and round the sides / waist / hips, its a girl.

Dont really know what my bump is - you cant really tell from behind (so boy?)but the weight has gone on my waist and hips and is quite low (so girl?) ??!!

Like you say, its 50/50 at the end of the day - just winds me up that people are 'certain' Im having a particular gender!!

Yep, and the ones who guessed correctly will be jubilant about it, and convinced they "knew", even though it was really nothing more than a lucky guess.

ButtonBoo · 05/07/2012 19:18

Isn't it if you are carrying all out front it's supposed to be a boy and if you are carrying more on the sides (?!) it's a girl?

I was just huge all over and got a girl.

Two predictors that seem to have rung true amongst my friends are:

  1. Linea negra which goes up above your nelly button = boy, lines negra that goes up to belly button, or none at all = girl
  2. Shaving legs/armpits much less than before pg = girl.

Both true in my case!!!

ButtonBoo · 05/07/2012 19:20

And for a bit of fun you should check out the Chinese baby gender predictor. Been right for all 4 of my NCT friends and me!!!

SoozleQ · 05/07/2012 23:10

I had a really visible line all the way up my belly, was carrying high, all out front and had a girl. This time, no line has yet appeared (25 weeks), I'm carrying low and leg hair has gone on strike - who knows if this one is the other flavour. Dp thinks it's another girl!

CandyPop · 06/07/2012 06:27

Yes it really peed me off when ppl said it with such c

CandyPop · 06/07/2012 06:32

Oops posted to early.... But as I was saying, it really peed me off when ppl said with such conviction that it was a boy! I always went by the old wives tales where a whole loada tosh and only for fun.

Had my scan this week and it is a girl! HA in ppls face!! ( I don't know why ppl guessing irritated me so much blush I think it because some closer friends knows I had a slight preference for my first to be a girl so they said boy to annoy me?!?!

bettybat · 06/07/2012 06:50

I couldn't figure out the Chinese prediction way Blush It's beyond my current levels of intelligence. Though to be fair, I work in web and called my laptop the "internet machine" the other day after not being able to remember what it should be called.

I have high and in front bump, then it drops and it's low and in front. I mostly get sick of being told I'll "never push that out" so people just guessing the sex is relatively benign!

Chocaholics · 06/07/2012 07:16

I had a bump all at the front and you couldn't tell I was pregnant from the back. Everyone told me it would be a boy but I had a girl. The MW told me the where you carried was due to how strong your abdominal muscles were....

urbanturban · 06/07/2012 08:04

Ha ha these have all made me giggle!

Having said that, I had an 'all-around' bump with both DD1and DD2 and this time with DC3 (a boy) I still look normal from front and back (ie have a waist!) but when I turn side-on, have a HUGE bump (am 27 weeks). And I can assure you, after 3 pregnancies in 4.5 years, I have NO stomach muscles left! Grin

So maybe it is true after all....!Wink

MissPollysTrolleyed · 06/07/2012 14:16

I know it's probably silly but I have some faith in the bump shape and gender theory although I can't imagine why girls would give one shape and boys another.

Everyone told me I was having a boy from my bump shape and I had a boy. My bump is the same this time so I think I'm having a boy again.

I had a linea negra from my pelvic bone to my belly button with my boy but have none this time round. I'm also shaving my legs and underarms less although that could be laziness so wondering if it's a girl after all.

abigboydidit · 08/07/2012 14:17

Just tried Chinese chart thingy. It seems DS should have been DD! They're predicting another boy for me this time...

BionicEmu · 08/07/2012 19:34

Last pregnancy my bump was splodged out everywhere. I had no linea nigrea (although don't know when this appears? Delivered at 34 weeks). Chinese prediction said girl. Everyone who looked at me, including MW, said girl.

I had the most gorgeous little boy Grin
