Shooting pain in right bum cheek... Suggestions for relief?!

I am nearly 24 weeks and the past couple of weeks I've been getting shooting pains in my right bum cheek. Often when I bend/walk in a particular way. My prenatal yoga class tonight seemed to really aggravate it and by the end I couldn't sit cross legged without searing pain.

My job is desk-bound, I think this makes it worse?

Any suggestions about what this could be, and ideas for pain relief? I might try some more walking... Going to ask midwife on Friday about it, but errr frankly my arse hurts and I need the wisdom of Mumsnet ASAP!!!

Owwwwww

Touch of sciatica?
I had something similar with DD and it eased by itself, but sciatica can persist longer.
Does a warm hot water bottle help at all?

Warmth on it does seem to help a bit - eg after a shower. Had a shower before bed and am now wrapped up - cant face the pain right now of getting up and making hot water bottle...!!!

I hope it eases and is not sciatica Sad

Try looking on YouTube for videos of pregnancy yoga for sciatica? It really helps, I found.

Sitting down for long periods - conversely to most thinking - is really bad for you :( I get this - starts in my tailbone then shoots all the way down my right leg. It's sciatica/the pifiormis muscle.

I try to get up and walk around at least every half hour, if not every hour. There's a stretch you can do that my DH (personal trainer) showed me - stand in front of the arm of your sofa, lift your right leg up to it and fold the leg at the knee so you're resting your leg along the arm of the sofa - so your right calf is along the right angle of the sofa arm if you're in front of the side of your sofa? Then slowly, with ease - and probably holding onto your DH for balance! - sit back down into a little crouch or squat by bending your left standing leg a little. Not a full on squat or anything but just the slight sitting back down while your leg is in that position really stretches out the nerves/muscles.

It's basically this - - but standing up since lying on my back and reaching my legs was more of an issue than the shooting pains!

I had this from around 25 weeks as well as a bad back and saw an osteopath - its completely gone and was within a few sessions

I could have kissed her Smile

If you are doing yoga, pigeon pose is magic for sciatica, it's one of those poses that isn't very comfortable at first, but as you relax and breathe into it, you can start to feel it really working. In pregnancy I would use an adapted pigeon pose, so you are not aiming to get your body upright.

Thank you all so much for your tips!

bettybat I tried out the stretch you describe this morning - it seemed good but a bit painful at first? I will try again this evening when I get home. Thanks for the link.

FutureNanny thank you for this!! Am going to give it a try when I get home this evening.

Teaandhobnobs thank you.... yes will google YouTube vids for pregnancy sciatica this evening!

Impatientwino A girl I work with said her sister had similar butt pain and had an excellent osteopath - so I'm going to get contact details ASAP!! Thank you, hadn't thought at all of an osteopath, thought a physio would be the only kind of practitioner who could help.

So the pain has still been pretty bad all of today :( :( to the extent I'm howling "ahhhh fuck" at my co-workers when I move the wrong way. Going up and down steps is pretty bad too, as is when I sit down on the loo.
