i'm sure this has been asked not too long ago but i can't find a recent thread.

Basically, i'm 25 weeks with twins, so happy to be preg but feeling rather fat and minging and would love to get my hair done. i think it's ok but just could do with some second, third opinions.....

I am also 25 weeks and would see no reason not to get highlights, go for it! The only thing that would put me off would be the upkeep long term- personally once on maternity leave I wouldn't be able to afford to get them re-done but obviously not an issue for everyone just something I personally would consider.

I have had them throughout both pregnancies. In terms of upkeep it can be pricey but I usually have full head then the next couple of times half head which brings te cost down (my hairdresser also just does a touch up job if she doesnt think half/head are necessary.

are we talking blond highlights? (heard bleach could be a prob?)

I've had highlights through all 3 pregnancies starting at 12 weeks I have it done twice through pregnancy. I have 2 colours blonde and red. I'm sure my hairdresser said its if u have a all over colour you are meant to avoid. Hth

sammyleh · 03/07/2012 09:16

I asked my hairdresser this same question the other day as I've avoided colouring my hair. she said highlights are fine because the colour doesnt touch the scalp, but told me to avoid an all over colour x

Spice17 · 03/07/2012 10:03

Yep, I have them, infact having done in next few weeks as am Bridesmaid for my mums wedding when 7 months pregnant - beached whale in a royal blue dresss anyone?! :)

MsElisaDay · 03/07/2012 10:27

I'd happily have highlights if I could afford the upkeep!
Though I went to a (very reputable) hairdresser for an all-over colour last week and they had no problem doing that either. Perhaps it depends on how over-cautious your hairdresser is, or the type of product they use. But they had no problem doing mine at all.

I am 16 weeks preg and have an all over colour every 4 weeks and will continue to do so. I have a lot of grey hair and no way am I letting it grow out! My hairdresser knows im preg so sure she would have said if there was a problem.

With ds I had highlights done in my hair all throughout the pregnancy.

This time, as I'm now dark instead of blond, I've had an all over colour done every 4-6 weeks since 11 weeks. My friend is a colourist and says the all over colour is no problem now - only things to watch out is as your skin changes you may find you become allergic/sensitive to the dye so to patch test every time. Also hormones can change how your hair takes colour so you could possibly end up with a completely different colour to what it normally gives you.

Nancy54 · 03/07/2012 11:27

ok, it looks like it's ok then!! nice hair here i come! (unless it goes wrong cos of pregnancy hormones.....°

I'm 22wks preg and I've just had blonde highlights, did want an all over colour aswell but hair dresser said she didn't reccommend but highlights would be fine Smile

EggsMichelle · 03/07/2012 19:56

Since my pregnant hairdresser is happy to put colour in her hair, then I let her put colour in mine! Right now I'm debating having a wax, things have gone a bit wild (tmi!)

mylittlemonkey · 04/07/2012 07:15

I have confirmed this with both hairdresser and 2 midwifes who said highlights are fine as they don't touch the head. Enjoy!

Nancy54 · 05/07/2012 18:40

After all that my hairdresser is on holiday for two weeks!! i shall have to be minging for a little longer....

The Mumsnet pregnancy book says all hair colours are fine these days, you'd have to be exposed to enormous amounts of hair dye for it to be a problem. My hairdresser said similar, but that highlights are even safer as the colour doesn't sit on your scalp so can't absorb through your skin anyway.
