Iron tablets

I am 35+5 and have been prescribed iron tablets by my MW - one at night increasing to one morning and night if I feel ok. She warned me of the possible side effects: constipation or diarrhoea neither of which I seem to be suffering from. HOWEVER - I have the most terrible smelly farty bottom! It is truly unpleasant to be in a room with me at the moment - luckily my husband is away so it is me and my 3 cats who are suffering most. I worry about going out in public as the smell is truly awful.
Can anyone tell me if this is 'normal' and will it improve with time? Not sure I can stand 4 or more weeks of this!!

I'm 35+4 and have been on iron tablets on and off since 6 weeks, I've had various different sorts and the ones that I am on seem to be the only ones that don't give me side affects - the others just made me feel like I was going to vomit! Ask your midwife to prescribe a different sort as they aren't agreeing with you.

I take an iron supplement called Spatone. It comes as little sachets of highly concentrated, naturally occuring ferrous spring water. You drink it mixed in with fruit juice, on an empty tummy in the morning. It's well known for being highly digestible with none of the nasty side effects of the pills (farts, black poo, constipation).

You won't get it on prescription unfortunately, but it is the best available.

I'm always banging on about Spatone. Bloody miraculous I tell you. If only you could get it on prescription....

Another vote for Spatone, you can easily buy online e.g Amazon (is quite heavy to lug, esp if pregnant)
