Just curious how much of an effect this has. I've heard that tight pants have the worst effect on sperm count but how bad really is the smoking?

Don't know but I got pregnant & my dh smoked (he quit during the pregnancy Smile). He also drinks a fair bit & was late 30s at the time. I was wondering if we'd have problems, but didn't, took about one year which I hear is normal. Lovely dd now.

Are you asking for yourself? I'd try not to worry if I were you, very difficult to get oh to quit smoking if they don't really want to, may as well bang head against wall.

Becky2011 · 28/06/2012 11:44

Will he quit if you get pregnant?

littleducks · 28/06/2012 11:55

I did, it didnt seem to affect dh, that said we are reasonably 'young.'

He was giving up on and off, promised faithfully to give up before dd was born and never smoke afterwards.............she is 6 and he is still smoking.

I do kind of hate him for that!

me and my guy were smoking and its a nightmare getting him to stop now. Im currently using the smoke outside rule. its not working... next trick will be hide the wallet so he cant go shop.

mcyawny · 28/06/2012 16:27

We were both smoking when I got pregnant, and gave up together when we found out.

my dp smokes and i got pg. i live in france and so many people smoke here, doesn't seem to affect their ability to reproduce!

SummerRain · 28/06/2012 18:40

we were both smoking.... all three times

ButtonBoo · 28/06/2012 20:32

Both dp and I smoked when I got pg. I quit when we got our BFP. DP quit when I was about 7mo pg. We've never smoke in the house though.

I came off the pill at the end of Jan and was pg 2 weeks later!!! DD was born 16/10/11.

CakeBump · 28/06/2012 20:53

DP is a very heavy smoker and at 44 (him) I was on and on at him to give up when we were ttc as I was convinced it was going to make the difference between being able to conceive and not...

In the end it took 7 cycles. I'm now 15 weeks and he's still smoking, although claims he will give up before the birth.

Its the one thing I would give anything to change about him... I hate it.

We both smoked before I got the BFP. I stopped straight away and haven't smoked since. He has continued to smoke. We have never smoked in our home. He is 40 this year, I am 33. I fell pregnant in our first month of trying with twins. I don't think smoking affects fertility very much at all.

Overlovedbyfrantickitty · 30/06/2012 09:29

Mine smoked but gave up as soon as I was pregnant. He's also overweight and drinks a fair amount, and has had a twisted testicle on two separate occasions. I also wondered if we'd have problems and was prepared for it to take a while, but it only took about five months. I think if we'd had trouble conceiving he would have started living a bit cleaner!

FlangelinaBallerina · 30/06/2012 17:05

I did. DH smoked, not heavily though, and we weren't trying. He's stopped now. I think it's reasonably common for smoker dads to stop during pregnancy- it's a good and proper kick up the arse.

RillaBlythe · 30/06/2012 17:11

We both smoked with dd1. He smoked with dd2. He still does. Not sure he will ever give up tbh. Funnily enough it's good for his ulcerative colitis so swings & roundabouts I guess in terms of his health.

Francagoestohollywood · 30/06/2012 17:11

I know at least 30 men who smoke and have fathered at least 2 children each.

ItsMyLastOne · 30/06/2012 23:05

My DP smoked loads including loads of cannabis (in the house too so I was inhaling it all despite not smoking myself). I'd been told I was infertile after tests for other things so we weren't being careful. I got pg within weeks of being told that.

This time DP has still been smoking (never, ever, ever near me though since 8 weeks pg in my first pregnancy) but only once or twice a day, sometimes not at all and it took about 18 months to conceive!

Casmama · 30/06/2012 23:15

My husband was 45 and smoked about 20 a day and I got pregnant in two months. He is still bloody smoking despite the fact he promised to give up though Angry
