Small bleed yday, nothing today - am 6 wks. It's likely everything is ok isn't it?

The practise nurse just called me back and said as its so early best just waiting for my normal dating scan (unless I bleed again)

It's normal isn't it? To go a small patch of dark blood and then brown spotting at 6 weeks? And the fact it's stopped is good isn't it?

Should I have insisted they scan me or am I right in agreeing to wait things out?

Boobs are very sore, nausea comes and goes. Just woke up from an hour and a half nap whilst DD has her nap but exhaustion could be from looking after a toddler?!

(I got spotting at 7 wks with DD so it's how my body works isn't it?)

I wouldn't say it was "normal" per say, but it's very common, yes, and it's likely the nurse is right. At 6 weeks you wouldn't see much of anything on a scan so there's not much point in doing one iyswim; you'd need to be 8 weeks + iirc.

Just wanted to (hopefully) offer you some reassurance. I had a small bleed (mostly spotting) at about 6 weeks and then a slightly larger (but still small) bleed at 8 weeks. Both were on the weekend so couldn't get through to normal GP but spoke to NHS direct who said unless bleeding through 1 pad an hour (!!!) then "wait and see". This was of course terrifying. My 32 week bump is currently squirming like mad and I can't wait to meet him/her!! There were no after effects from the bleeding which may have been related to my placenta being anterior or may have been nothing.

Of course no one can tell you that it'll definitely be ok, but there is no need to panic - good luck! Also out of interest because I was so worried I paid for a private early scan at 8 weeks (£50) which I found very reassuring.

It is quite common to have a period type bleed at around the time your period would be due, and if you're 6 weeks I'm guessing that would be about now?
The wait and see is crappy when you're worried I agree. I wish you well x

sammyleh · 27/06/2012 14:51

I had the same thing at around your stage too, petrified me but it was completely normal and disappeared after a few days. The way I was told is that dark blood is old blood and not a new bleed, watch out for bright red blood as that's fresh. Hope you feel a bit better soon xx

haloflo · 27/06/2012 18:51

Thank you all. I can't really afford a private scan (£99) so am going to sit tight for now. Still no bleed today so appears to be a one off.

Early pregnancy is stressful!

Whereabouts are you halo? There's a clinic near Fareham (Hants) that will do a dating scan for £59 if that's more affordable? Not a personal recommendation as I didn't actually use them in the end.

haloflo · 27/06/2012 20:25

North west lancashire, not much round here although I'll get back on google. £99 seems extortionate!

I am going to go against the grain here, it probably is nothing to worry about and is very common, I had similar at about 5 weeks and it has gone both ways for me. However, any bleeding should eb checked out, brown bleeding can be a sign ectopic pregnancy. A scan at 6 weeks will be able to locate the pregnancy and you should be able to see sac and fetal pole, I saw a heartbeat at 6 weeks so I would go and get checked out if I were you. Good luck!

farfallarocks · 28/06/2012 08:28

You should not need to pay for this, ask your GP to refer you to the EPU at hospital or some are walk in and you need no referral.

milkjetmum · 28/06/2012 08:44

I had similar but with quite a bit of right sided pain so I went to early preg unit to rule out ectopic. All was well (dd now 21 month!) But I agree ask for early preg unit.

I bled at around the same time. After ringing the midwife she told me the same as you, to rest and wait and see. I'm in Manchester and the nearest hospital to me has an EPU, after another bleed at eight weeks I rang them and they told me to go in for a scan. Everything was fine but I continued to bleed right throughout my pregnancy, sometimes brown, sometimes pinky orange and sometimes bright red with clots. They never found any reason for it but my DD is eight months old now and fine.

haloflo · 28/06/2012 12:17

I think it's a bit late to ask for a scan now really? I'd feel like I was pushing my luck.

I've had no pain, the nurse told me to act straight away if I got pain due to the risk of an ectopic. I think if it happens again they would refer me.

I looked back at posts I made when pg with DD and I spotted at 6+2. Still nothing today and no pain so I assume I'm still pg and all is ok.

Im gonna ask my mw when I meet her at 8 weeks if I can get scanned on the early side of the dating scan range (ie 10 weeks) fingers crossed they aren't too busy x

Well it's up to you, I don't think you are pushing your luck at all, sometimes ectopic's cause no pain until they rupture. Of course its very very likely this is not the problem and its just a bit of normal spotting but if you are concenred at all, don;t feel like you are being a bother. My personal view is any and all bleeding in pregnancy should be checked out. Great that it has stopped and you have no pain though, best of luck.

kirdy · 28/06/2012 15:46

Apparently its more normal than people think or so my midwife told me. I had a bleed at 6 weeks turned out to be a blood clot in uterus which showed up on scan at 8 weeks, was told to expect to lose baby as it was quite large but im now 15 weeks and clot has near enough gone and baby is totally fine!! I spotted after that bleed till 12 1/2 weeks. Could be what you bleeding could of been?? But there are many other reasons women bleed in pregnancy. I would get on at them for a scan at least to put your mind at ease.xxx

MummyNinja · 28/06/2012 16:03

I'm 6 weeks and was sent off for a scan yesterday just for having some lower abdominal pain with no bleeding.

You definitely can see enough on a scan even at 6 weeks to know all is well (or otherwise), I have a picture of my little peanut to prove it - so I'd say defo ask for an early scan if you can ... it will give you peace of mind and that's going to be healthier all round, you don't need to be stressing, you should be able to enjoy these early days :) I'm so glad I went or I would have worried myself silly for the next six weeks!

The only thing is they may do an internal scan rather than external at this early stage, as they did with me - they get a better view that way. Nothing to worry about though - didn't hurt at all!
