Do I need to be taking it? Is there Anything else I need other than folic acid? Saw GP today but she didn't mention anything.

I think vitamin d is now recommended too. Taking something like pregnacare gives you the right dosage.

I didn't for first pregnancy & won't for this one - unless told to by mw. Your diet should provide all required vits/mins except enough folic acid. I ended up taking iron supplements last time as my bloods showed low iron however.

Hi holls!

The pregnacare I've seen doesn't give recommended amount of Vit D. Should be 10 micrograms. It's to help absorb calcium (good for bone formation). Most of population of UK doesn't get enough through diet and sunshine alone.

reikizen · 25/06/2012 21:07

10 micrograms of vitamin D for pregnancy and breastfeeding is recommended in the NICE guidelines.

BettyandDon · 25/06/2012 21:09

Yes it's now recommended so check your multivit.

Most of the bodies Vit D comes from the sunlight and let's face it it ain't exactly sunny much these days. I had a deficiency diagnosed at my 6 week antenatal check last year and have been on supplements since.

Post natal check even...

tiddleypompom · 26/06/2012 06:25

Hmm. In which case I shall get myself to a chemist forthwith! I needed some different folic acid tablets anyway as the ones I have require you to take 3 per day - too easy to forget one.

Bloody sunshine (lack of).

Mollusk · 26/06/2012 06:43

In the US, doctors recommend 40,000iu (not sure what mcg equiv is, but it's a lot) to pregnant women. They are convinced D is essential to all sorts of things.

Think I shall take myself off to Boots today - only about 6 weeks pg so hope they will tell me what to do. Have folic acid already. Sounds like Vit D is fairly important.

Struggling to get up in mornings at moment - not like me. Can't work out if it's that I'm tired as its the end of term, or if it's the growing (hopefully) bean that's doing it.

Was very weepy last week (and total bitchface too) so that's the emotional upheaval started!!!!

Have a good day all Smile xx
