I'm 28 weeks pregnant. I know we don't need to eat for two, but I always feel hungry especially in the morning. I had some strawberries and a croissant with a piece of cheese for breakfast before I left home, and now I'm buying a sausage, egg and cheese muffin before I get into the office...(I'm usually a size 12-14 and don't usually have two breakfasts!)

Eugh! Me too! Had cereal this morning which is usually enough, and already eyeing up my lunch! I say eat away

Blueaddie · 21/06/2012 09:34

I am eating like I am in training for next year's series of The Biggest Loser.

I wasn't this bad with the first child but this time I am like an eating machine. I even thought this time around 'take it easy, you don't want to have a load of weight to lose at the end'. But no, I am on course to be massssssssive

Your first breakfast wasn't massive, don't worry about it. You can always lose weight later....or not.

ScrambledSmegs · 21/06/2012 09:38

Im 19 weeks and I don't think I'm eating more than normal - more like less. I had very bad nausea in early pregnancy and my appetite hasn't come back. Not helped by the fact that I seem to be craving salads and veg Confused.

Very Envy of those with good pregnancy appetites. Think of those lovely little babies you're growing with all that lovely food!

Also, for most people the period of pregnancy when you could manage to eat for two is quite short. You probably had at least some nausea and morning sickness for a while, so odds are you won't have been getting your 2000 calories then. And pretty soon you'll get bigger and there won't be enough room in your stomach to hold a great deal. It may be that your body is stockpiling for that time. You could be pregnant for another 14 weeks, and can't necessarily assume you'll always be able to get 2200 calories a day down you during that time. Just because your appetite is big now doesn't mean it will stay that way.

I'm 35 weeks now and like you was a 12-14 before conceiving. I've really lost appetite during pregnancy, and the 24-31 week period was the only time I could comfortably eat lots. This is only my first and I'm no expert, but I tend to think you do what you have to do to get through the pregnancy now and pick up the pieces later if necessary. The body is intelligent.

SomedayIllFlyAway · 21/06/2012 09:56

I am not eating anything extra than I would normally eat, but due to hyperemesis which only really eased around 20 weeks I still haven't got my appetite back fully. I am also not really craving foods.

I have just had a sandwich from Waitrose for my breakfast (not great I know!) and fancied something sweet so picked up a pack of 5 jam doughnuts; I have had one and it isn't as nice (IMO) as Asda's, so may not eat the rest.

Macaroons · 21/06/2012 10:55

I do eat normal portions for lunch and dinner so am probably just waking up hungry. Have gained about 18 pounds so far, while baby only weighs about 2 pounds at the moment... I think I just need abit of self control as I don't want a huge baby and I don't want to have loads to shed afterwards!

On a typical weekday I'm eating:

  • Muesli+banana for breakfast with semi-skimmed milk (pre preg I was doing WW and would have had branflakes with skimmed milk and banana)
  • Mid-morning snack of a cereal bar/kit kat
  • Lunch is tuna mayo sweetcorn sandwich with packet crisps, grapes and apple (pretty much same as pre-preg)
  • late afternoon snack of cup of tea and 2 biscuits
  • same dinner as pre-preg
  • coffee and biscuit before bed.

Hmm. that is a lot of biscuits.....

On a weekend I would tend to eat more as we would probably have coffee and cake out somewhere and maybe also eat out/have pizza or takeaway.

Aworryingtrend · 21/06/2012 11:37

Just to add I have gained 13 pounds so far and I'm 24 weeks (tomorrow) so 18 pounds at 28 weeks sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

Thumbwitch · 21/06/2012 11:40

I'm tending to eat more in the evenings, mostly snack foods (not too bright) - but find I still can't eat in the morning or it brings on the acid really badly.
I lost about half a stone in the first trimester though, from lack of appetite and nausea - and have since put on about 6kg (13lb). So I'm not much more than I was when I fell pg and am now 23w.
Will try and rein it in though - in my first pg I only put on 11kg (24lb) in the whole pregnancy, and lost it all in 2w after DS was born. Would like to manage the same again this time!

Beans1977 · 21/06/2012 11:55

I think this all makes sense. My mw said you can put on the most weight in second trimester as it's when you're feeling at your best and are therefore most likely to be eating more. First trimester you can be too nauseous and she said third trimester some people get bloating and find they can only eat smaller amounts. I'm 27 weeks and have put on 13 lbs so far but my diet has been very similar to pre-pregnancy apart from the mornings, when like macaroons I am starving! I had cereal at home this morning and then had to buy a sandwich on the way in to work!

Beans1977 · 21/06/2012 11:56

Should add I was a size 14 to start with though and I was carrying a few extra pounds here and there!

signet2012 · 21/06/2012 12:01

I'm enjoying ryvita and spready cheese at the moment. I've put on 17 pounds and I'm 32 weeks but I was already far too fat and heavy. I can't say I've noticed I'm eating much more maybe more picky things perhaps Grin

OTTMummA · 21/06/2012 12:27

Im 35 weeks and have had a bacon sandwich, mars bar, 2 glasses of milk and a glass of organic OJ for breakfast Blush which is a lot, even for a greedy pig like me.
However, i didn't eat dinner last night, just a yoghurt and cup of tea as i find my appetite diminishes throughout the day, usually because i am too tired to get myself some food!
But have made some egg mayonnaise for my sandwiches for lunch which i will probably pair up with some wotsits and maybe some cutted up apple and banana later Grin

OTTMummA · 21/06/2012 12:28

Forgot to say, have only put on 13lbs so far, but haven't found an increase in my appetite until about 32 weeks.

Macaroons · 21/06/2012 12:49

I find that I don't want to eat so much during dinner now (probably that's why I'm so hungry in the morning!) but I find that I like to snack a lot during the day. it's best not to let me have access to any biscuits / chocolate or I'll eat them! Blush
