UTI?

For the past couple of weeks I have occasionally had pain across my lower abdomen and through my lower back into my kidney when I wee. It doesn't happen every time though which has prevented me from going to the docs because I will think I'm ok.

I just went and it was sharp pain in my back and kidney area as I urinated.

I had my midwife apt 3 weeks ago and she tested a urine sample but I don't know what for. Would she have tested for uti?

Does this sound like a uti? Also if I feel it in my kidney area does that mean it's spread to my kidney (I know this is bad!) or would I have a fever and feel generally awful of this was the case?

I have my 20 wk scan on Monday and I think they do a urine test then. Am I ok to wait til then to get it looked at or are UTIs to be treated urgently in pregnancy?

Sorry that's a lot of questions!

You should have your urine sample tested at every appointment, they test for protein. If you had protein and swollen ankles in later pregnancy it indicate pre eclampsyia. However they do test the urine for other things too, if there was something wrong with it she would have said something to you there and then.

How many weeks are you? If I were you I would give your midwife a call or go and see your GP. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about but it could be something that you don't have to put up with or something that they need to know about.

Thanks for replying lizzywig. I'm 20 weeks. Will waiting until Monday to see GP be ok or is a potential UTI something that needs to be dealt with straight away?

I think if you had a kidney infection you would feel really terrible. I would go to the out of hours GP and get them to 'dip' your urine. At least that way if it's a UTI they can get you on anti biotics straight away and they are usually pretty fast acting. Best of luck I have one just now and they are not pleasant :-(

Thanks.

I just feel generally very achey after going to the loo. Could be ligaments I suppose but I shall def get it checked out.

Thanks for your advice

Just to let you know they didn't do a urine test at my 20 week scan appt so I would arrange another appt just in case. Hope all goes well

Just to say, I've not been having pains as such, but I have been having issues with weeing recently: feeling like I need to go all the time, and then only being able to squeeze a drop out. Also feel generally quite achey in my lower abdomen.

I went to see the GP about this on Friday cos I was worried it might be a UTI...she dipped a little stick thing in my pee, and it came back clear, but she said this doesn't necessarily mean I'm UTI-free: she has sent off a pot of my pee to be tested 'to see what grows in it' - ie. in case there's some bacterial infection in there not picked up by her simple stick test.

So my advice would be go to the GP on Monday morning and ask them to send off a urine sample to check for UTIs.

HOWEVER, it does sound like youre in more pain than me, so maybe you could go to out of hours GP this weekend to be on the safe side? HTH.
