Intense rib pain

On my left side, under my breast. Really intense and sharp, not related to kicking. I don't remember this with Ds. Sometimes it spreads round the back under my shoulder blade.

Paracetamol doesn't help. I am 31 weeks.

I had this with DS. I used to find taking my bra off brought some relief, or padding around the area when that wasn't an option(e.g. a fabric breastpad between elastic of bra and under boob / rib area) Is it worse when you've been sitting for a while? My GP said it was to do with the baby's position and it would be better once he 'dropped' towards the end of pregnancy - this was actually what happened at around 37 weeks and the relief was tremendous.

I had this with DS1 & 2. And as of today I have it with DC3 also.
Part of the baby is wedged under my right ribcage....it was worse earlier as it was going all around to the back. But it is just at the front now.
My DSs were both massive,so I had no relief until they were born. I'm just going to have to suck it up for 8 weeks! Confused
You have my sympathy.

I had this - ended up in A&E crying with pain and on co-codamol for a month. Could hardly breathe or walk - baby was pressing upward and it was agony.

There are meds you can take.

I'm getting it too at 23 weeks, have a very short torso as only 5ft 2 ins, and appear to be carrying very high, so wondering if that makes it worse?

They feel like they're being stretched outwards and it can be very uncomfortable but not terribly painful at the moment.

Oh the joys of pregnancy! :)

I had this, pain round my ribs was excruciating. One day met dh in the train station he saw me and asked how I was and I just burst into floods of tears as I was just in so much pain. It got a lot better once baby dropped.

JulesRitsa · 16/06/2012 21:01

Yes, had this on the right side for the last 10 weeks of pregnancy, not constant but most days, almost like a stabbing or hotness. Taking the bra off helped, although not easy in the workplace! Definitely worse when sitting down for long periods.

Portofino · 16/06/2012 21:03

Oh yes - I had this too. Lying down was the only thing that would ease it.

Rib pain can (though judging by other replies, not necessarily) be a sign of breech presentation. My baby was diagnosed as breech by ultrasound during labour and when the consultant looked at the scan she said 'you've probably been suffering with quite intense rib pain haven't you?' Yes!

MrsJamin · 17/06/2012 13:49

I had right rib pain with a breech presentation, I would check it out with your midwife.

I had short bursts of intense rib pain that turned out to be rib flare. Think it was because the tendons in my ribcage were expanding but wow, it was very painful, especially when I lifted my arm. It did go after a while, forget how long, but only had paracetamol Hmm for it.
