Is there a blood test for toxoplasmosis?

Just wondering if there is a blood test I can have to see if I'm immune to this, I have had horses for years and a cat and now a dog so there's a chance I have already had it and have some immunity.
Reason I ask is my dog has a habit of rolling in fox poo which is utterly vile in itself (and has done nothing to help my morning sickness this morning) but more worryingly I know foxes frequently have this nasty bug in their poo, and i know it can have a devastating effect during pregnancy. For the sake of my sanity if I knew I was immune I would still obv be careful but I wouldnnt be sitting here worrying myself sick every time she rolls in it and I have to clean it off her

Hello, AFAIK it is not a standard test in the UK but you should definitively share your concerns with your MW and can have your blood tested for it. If you cannot have it for free, I would go private in your shoes to put my mind at rest (if you are immune, you are fine for the rest of the pg - if not immune, you know what precautions you need to take)
I know I am not immune and in France, in that case you get a blood test for that every 6 weeks, but on the other hand, I am not exposed to cats nor pets, have not got a garden, stop eating rare red meat, wash carefully salads and herbs...

Yes, ask your midwife. I'm also around cars and horses and the mw has just tested for it.

Oh, and wear rubber gloves when dealing with poo. I get some on a larger size to wear over warm gloves in cold weather.

There is definitely a test and sounds to me like you have a good case for asking for it!

Great stuff I'll speak to her ASAP

Is it not standard in the uk? It is here (Spain) my test showed no immunity which surprised me. Speak to your mw.

Yes there is a test...in Belgium you have a monthly blood test when you're pregnant for things such as toxo, thyriod etc. I guess you should ask your midwife. I have friends with cats and outdoors type people and I have yet to meet anyone who is immune to toxo.

Just curious, but what do they do if you acquire toxoplasmosis mid-pregnancy (ie: what is the treatment)?

scrablet · 10/06/2012 08:06

My cat had worms during my 1st PG, which I noticed when I came back from Honeymoon and he had been sleeping on my bed...yuck. My GP arranged for a test immediately.
TBH not sure about poss treatment! but must be something.

Depending on which stage of the pg you are in when you contract toxoplasmosis, the damages on the baby and the drugs you take are more or less strong but they do make you feel sick, very sick. You don't want to go through that after the morning sickness stage...
