Stomach pains (IBS-like) at 6 weeks - call the midwife??

During yesterday evening and overnight last night I had really terrible stomach pains (like IBS constipation/trapped wind type pain Blush) which have died down now, although belly is still a bit grumbly. No blood or anything like that, should I call the midwife? Seems hardly worth bothering but not sure whether I need to be checked out or not.

Without any blood, I wouldnt. I am sure it is totally fine. I doubt they would scan you without any blood.

Tummy pains are normal in early pregnancy - sort of your body stretching and getting ready!

If you are reallly really worried then call but honestly, try not to be :)

It's probably wind. Early pregnancy is noted for wind and bloating, then the vomiting.....fun, fun, fun.

To be honest there's no point calling anybody because even if it's not wind and things have gone wrong, there is nothing anybody can do. Chances are though, as you're not bleeding, that it's a warning to lay off the beans or lentils or whatnot. If the pain returns and doesn't ease with digestive type remedies - visit to loo, glass of milk, hot water bottle, peppermint - or you feel more than usually odd or the pain spreads in to your shoulder then you should seek immediate medical advice and ask them to rule out ectopic pregnancy. Don't read the link and freak out - I think you've got wind but every pregnant woman should know the symptoms of an ectopic just in case.

Thanks for the replies, I think it is wind (feels 'stomachy' IYSWIM, although I've also had some period type pains over the last few days - nothing to write home about though).

I said the same thing to DH Northernlurker - it's too early to see anything anyway so seems no point calling anyone really, but he is a bit alarmist. He had a similar reaction when I crawled out of the bedroom doubled over with a UTI when pregnant with DD - I couldn't convince him that bladder pain and uterine pain are completely different and it was nothing to do with baby.

Thanks again, will have some more peppermint tea!

emsy have you been constipated?

TMI ALERT

i was for a week a very long week. Then my body had had enough and started to empty cue excruciating pains in my tummy to the point of crying everytime i sat on the toilet.

finally decided to take some laxtulose which has worked wonders to releive me and help go toilet with no pain atall.

I am 7 weeks and i feel your pain

emsyj · 07/06/2012 20:33

I'm permanently constipated Skinny - it's genetic, my DMum is the same! I have done a few hard little pellets today (TMI) but I could do with a good clearout.

Is it okay to take lactulose at this stage then? I always have a massive bottle of it in for emergencies (DH eats a LOT of eggs...) so could take some but wasn't sure if it was safe in first trimester.

Perfectly safe.

In fact. at my scan today i was talking to the nurse about it and she said if taking it just before bed each night helps to relieve the pain of it all then go for it. Obviously long term use is not advised but for a couple weeks all is ok.

Whatever you do don't take senna i took some in desperation and could not leave the bathroom for 3 hours!

emsyj · 07/06/2012 21:13

Oh excellent, I will break open the bottle! Grin

I haven't taken senna for ages - I think it works in a different way, doesn't it - or someone told me that years ago, that senna actually makes you poo whereas lactulose just softens what's there to make it easier to 'go' Confused or something.

Don't overdo the lactulose though or you will fart like a horse:)
