Well i would be questioning why if the baby has stopped growing at all why they have left her to get to 35 weeks.
Has she had a scan to try and detect why the baby has stopped growing?
need more details really, but she shouldn't of been just left to it IYKWIM.

blueberryboybait · 07/06/2012 13:38

Has she had a scan or has the bump measurement stayed the same? If it is the bump measurement it does not necessarily mean the baby has stopped growing. If it is by scan, what is their plan of action?

ItsMyLastOne · 07/06/2012 13:44

OTT I don't think she's been left to it for 3 weeks, usually this is when the baby has been measured and is basically measuring smaller than they should do at that gestation. It sounds like it's something that's just been found, not found 3 weeks ago and ignored since.

Did she have a scan that showed the baby had stopped growing 3 weeks ago? Have they told her what they plan to do?
Often in these circumstances they'll wait a couple of days and give steroid injections and then deliver the baby.
Luckily at 32-35 weeks the baby will have a much better chance outside the woman than a very early baby.

If it's just from the fundal height measurement that she's measuring small than not much can be confirmed just from that so usually they'll book you in for a growth scan. That's what I had when I was measuring small at 35 weeks. From the fundal height it seemed like dd hadn't grown for about 3 or 4 weeks but all was fine on the scan and she came on the due date with no complications.

whatever happens, I wish her luck. And make sure she asks lots of questions if she doesn't know what's going on. Good luck Smile

Just wanted to say that my DS1 was born at 28 weeks so quite a bit earlier than your DD's baby is now and he is doing marvellously at 14 months with no lasting health problems that we're aware of.

He spent 2 months in NICU and SCBU and so we got to meet a lot of parents with prem babies, including those who had IUGR like your grandson/daughter. To reassure you, most of the babies we knew with IUGR did very very well and spent very little time on the ward before being discharged. Most were just small with no problems. By 35 weeks all of the babies major organs will be developed, barring the lungs - your daughter will likely need a couple of steroid injections to help mature them before they deliver the baby IF they decide to deliver early.

Babies are only kept in SCBU if they cannot do any/all of the following:

  • maintain their own body temperature
  • feed (either bottle or breast)
  • breathe without assistance
And gain weight

Given that the baby is almost to term it is likely that they will be able to do most, if not all of these. If the baby is very small they may just want to check that it can feed properly and gain weight before they allow him/ her to be discharged.

I know it's easier said than done but try not to worry unduly, although I do appreciate that it's a worrying time, especially if you hadn't been warned that there was a 'problem'. I am now 32 weeks pregnant and will be punching the air with happiness if I get another 3 weeks under my belt before the baby comes.

Best of luck!

Well they can't be too worried if they don't need to see her for 2 weeks.

I know it's hard for her (and you) not to worry but it's very common for this to happen. The problem is all the charts are based on certain things to do with the woman's height, weight etc, but there's so much room for error. Some women will just have smaller babies than others.
When I was told DD was measuring small for the dates, that was just by the charts but she was still a normal weight at birth.

It really probably is nothing to be concerned about, and as long as the baby has grown by the next scan there's probably nothing they'll need to do.

I hope she's calmed down and feels more well informed and relaxed about it all now.

will post more when she has her scan thurs morning

My DD slowed down and dropped below her "line" at my 32 week appt, at 36w there was no growth and so she dropped well below any lines and I was sent to the hospital.

They scanned and said the estimated she was 4-4.5lb max, but had a normal head, and she would be better off fed 2-3 hourly by me and so I was induced. SHe arrived 2 days later at 6lb 2oz, very skinny but very healthy, and her head was 90th centile! I had v.little water so my bump was tiny.

She has just finished her degree and graduates from Cambridge this month :)

Midgetm · 20/06/2012 19:18

I had a similar situation and was induced at 37 weeks. DD was small but didn't need special care. She just wasn't getting enough nutrients from my placenta and was better off on the outside. No health problems and perfectly formed. Just a tiny baby. Try not to panic. If they were really worried they would be seeing her before 2 weeks.

Purplehonesty · 20/06/2012 19:21

I am 39 weeks on Sunday and baby measured 34 weeks last time i was check.
They said oh she is just small and gave me a scan
She is still there kicking away and i don't have to go back, got a section scheduled for Tuesday for other reasons.
So I am at least 4 weeks behind and my other preg pal is 3 weeks behind on her growth
Tell dd not to worry!

jessebuni · 20/06/2012 20:42

Mine has been up and down. I was measuring between 1-4 weeks too small the whole way through until 38 weeks where suddenly she had a growth spurt and measured a week ahead.

Every baby is different and grows at different rates and they all come out at different sizes as we know. So as long as the heart rate is fine and all looks well on a scan then I would imagine that there isn't any problem and your daughter can relax (as much as she can) about it. If they're going to keep an eye on it then I imagine everything will be fine.

ilovesprouts · 22/06/2012 16:51

shes had her scan baby is showing at 33 weeks shes 37 on tues babys doing fine ,but has to go back for a more detailed scan nxt week .also she been moved to the cons ward now not at bc
