Just wondered when everyone was planning to work until. I'd like to try up to due date so can have more time with baby after, but is tht unrealistic (first baby-no probs do far, 16 weeks)

I'm 31 weeks got 3 weeks left on friday I'm
Am so tires and irritable I would have left now but won't get much time after although I can tag annual leave on at the end ! But then I work 50 hour week physical job have 2 older kids and am doing a diploma !

emsyj · 30/05/2012 08:37

I would see how you feel later on. I finished 3 and a bit weeks before my due date and had DD 4 days later! Shock It was starting to feel a bit too much by the end, but I figured that I could have 5 weeks to go til the birth so I should battle on. I wish I had listened to my body and finished work sooner.

You may feel 100% right up to the last minute, so if your work can be a bit flexible I would say for now that you want to work til your due date but then keep the option to finish earlier if you feel that you want to slow down a bit.

I worked up to 36 weeks. My job was very active but on the flip side never had any problems physically

llamallama · 30/05/2012 09:01

I finished at 33 weeks, baby didn't come till 40 weeks but it was the best thing I did. I was physically well but my job was taking its toll & I needed to rest. We need to listen to our bodies, it was only a few years ago that GP advice was to finish work at 32-34 weeks, but now a lot of mums seem to try and go as long as possible. Depends on your job I guess but I LOVED my pre-baby maternity leave!

popsnsqeeze · 30/05/2012 09:04

I planned to work up until the birth, the last few weeks were bloody difficult though and I did sort of slack off and mentally check out. As it happened, I had contractions for a full week before I actually delivered so I was home for that week. I was able to take it as sick time though not as maternity leave (not in the UK)

Midgetm · 30/05/2012 09:16

Last time I worked up to 37 and could have probably gone on for longer except baby had other ideas and came early. I also plan on taking it to about 38 or 39 this time but then a week of enjoying peace and quiet and resting the cankles.

Beans1977 · 30/05/2012 09:35

I'm planning to work to 36, am 24 now so we'll see how the next few months go. I definitely want some time on my own before baby arrives (this is DC#1 - might not feel the same next time) and we're also moving house when I'll be about 33 weeks so I'd like to unpack a few boxes and make a bit of a nest before baby arrives if I can!

bonnymiffy · 30/05/2012 10:49

I'm currently only 12 weeks (with DC2) and would plan to hang on till 35 weeks, which is what I did last time. DD arrived at 36+3 so I was glad to have gone when I did! I'm planning to save some annual leave to make the last weeks 4 day weeks (if my employer doesn't mind) as this certainly made it easier last time round. It wasn't the work that was difficult or stressful particularly, but the drive to and from was uncomfortable.

AhsokaTano · 30/05/2012 10:57

I've planned to take 2 weeks holiday at 36 weeks then tag maternity leave onto that. I'm honestly not sure if I'll manage it as my job is very physical with lots of manual handling.

I'm planning to aim for the dates I've given them but if I physically can't do it I'll have to have a rethink.

Velo · 30/05/2012 11:03

My maternity leave kicks in at the beginning of Week 39 but I don't expect that I'll be very functional by then! Like the idea of planning some holiday time before the maternity leave starts - will def. look into that.

marchpoppy · 30/05/2012 11:27

I'm working until tomorrow - yippee! Am 34.5 weeks. Ready to finish, looking after a toddler too and pretty tired. Using annual leave as well.

cakeladyc · 30/05/2012 11:31

I'm working until 36 weeks (i'm 24+5 now) but i'm taking two weeks holiday and then maternity leave starts after.
If the weather is like it has been in August, i'm definitely going to want to be at home and not in an office!

Commutinghell · 30/05/2012 11:48

I worked until my due date, which was Sunday just gone and I'm still sat here waiting for the baby to turn up so I'm really glad I worked so late. I did keep really active during pregnancy which helped I think, I've felt fine since the sickness passed at about 16 weeks.

lauraloo09 · 30/05/2012 11:57

just notified my employer my intent for mat leave from 37 weeks but i have a month of annual leave to take so keeping that back to add on before my mat leave begins so i will actually finish when I am 33 weeks...only 13 weeks just now the next 20 weeks will drag in :(

CountryKitty · 30/05/2012 12:03

With DD1 I stoped at 35 weeks and she was 2wks late! With DD2 I stopped at 34 weeks and she was 8 days late. Loved that time before baby arrived, pottering, meeting up for coffee's etc. Only 5.5 wks with no 3 at the mo but will def stop early again. Quite a mentally demanding job and I know I won't be with it later on!

hufflepuffle · 30/05/2012 12:36

I am self employed and plan to work until 38 weeks. First baby and I realise I night be kiding myself! Recruiting now for a replacement for me for 4 months, so I hope to find someone that might be flexible beforehand if need be! You are all very lucky to have options of annual leave, sickness and maternity leave!! And that is not sour grapes at all, just pure jealousy!! Envy I will have no income for 4 months except stat maternity, but it is all worth it for us!!

applepieinthesky · 30/05/2012 13:37

My job isn't physically demanding but it is mentally and I find that makes me just as tired. I have just over two weeks annual leave to take which I think I will tag onto the beginning of mat leave. I'll probably leave at around 35/36 weeks.

Littlecherublegs · 30/05/2012 13:57

I've tagged some annual leave onto the beginning of my Maternity Leave so I'll actually be about 35 weeks when I finish.

Im really looking forward to it - just time to do very little, read some books, watch the Olympics, last minute shopping for baby stuff, and sleep!!

Im currently 25 weeks and have started to feel the effects of my pregnancy a lot more in the last couple of weeks (ie. get tired more easily and out of breath walking up stairs!!) so think I'll definitely be ready for some time off in another 10 weeks!!
