Any secret pate eaters?

Any other secret pate eaters that should say.

I've had really bad sickness which has meant barely eating or drinking but am feeling a bit better today. I've just had two slices of bread with pate on, which has made me feel so much better. AIBU? (not brave enough to post this in actual AIBU mind).

The NHS website says I shouldn't have done it because of the risk of listeria and too much vitamin A. It was a brand new sealed tub brought from Tesco today and I didn't have very much.

Feeling guilty now though. What do you reckon?

Not pate but I did lick out the whole chocolate brownie mixing bowl before remembering about the raw egg.
I think the risk is really small - plus it's done now so no point worrying about it. I am sure you will be fine.

Wolfiefan · 20/05/2012 18:09

It's a risk but not a probability. Don't do it again if it makes you worry!

I was really good when I was pg. What a shame it took me several months to remember crunchy nut cornflakes have peanuts in. (Asthma and eczema in family so advice was avoid them!)

PurplePidjin · 20/05/2012 18:10

YANBU, the risks of illness from lack of food are greater than the risk of listeria from pate from a reputable source imo.

My name is Pidj and last night, at a dinner party, I ate parma ham Blush

PollyIndia · 20/05/2012 18:15

Oh god, I ate parma ham yesterday too. Two strikes.....

TitsalinaBumSquash · 20/05/2012 18:15

I eat runny eggs, I had a medium steak (although was quite well done for medium) and sushi (from a restaurant - only very thin slivers of Tuna though) I have had such bad ms it's a case of eating what I can keep down when I can keep it down.

Pâté is always gross though so on that grounds YABU Grin

mandoo · 20/05/2012 18:17

I had Terrible sickness all the way though my last pregnancy. My G.P's advice to me was 'eat what you like when you like. Go home and have a cray fish sandwich with blue cheese on top, at least your eating something.'

Whether it says down is another thing!

KatieMiddleton · 20/05/2012 18:18

Are we not supposed to eat Parma ham?

Apparently sushi is ok according to NHS so long as fresh. I quite fancy some now...

Dropdeadfred · 20/05/2012 18:19

Pâté is one of the foodstuffs mentioned in a huge amount if food poisoning cases - but if it was brand new I guess you'd be okay

KatieMiddleton · 20/05/2012 18:19

I didn't know you were pregnant Pidj. Congratulations! :)

It was you who wanted a baby but was going to wait wasn't it? [pg and confused emoticon]

TitsalinaBumSquash · 20/05/2012 18:20

Really? Sushi is ok? Good, I feel less guilty now, it's one of the only things I can eat that doesn't give me chronic reflux that makes me sick to the point of being admitted (like last night) because my stomach has started bleeding. Hmm

WhippingGirl · 20/05/2012 18:25

sorry but i didnt cut out anything this time. i eat tons of sushi at work - im sure its better than all the greasy carby food available to take away otherwise and it stops me falling asleep at 3pm.

i have eaten some pate but loads of brie/stilton etc.

so far no probs with pregnancy - (past 12 weeks bya long way). i'm having a hard time in life right now im not denying most of the few foods i enjoy.

risks aside all i really eat is sushi and olives so at least this baby will have a brain :-)

KatieMiddleton · 20/05/2012 18:26

The good news about sushi

raininginbaltimore · 20/05/2012 18:27

Pate is only bad because of vitamin A.

I have eaten raw eggs this time.

KatieMiddleton · 20/05/2012 18:29

No it isn't. It's the risk of listeriosis as well with pate. Although has anybody ever met anybody who got listeriosis from supermarket pate?

TitsalinaBumSquash · 20/05/2012 18:30

And the shops are all now shut Sad

Sushi for me tomorrow then. Smile

I was pregnant a long time ago, but I remember eating coldslaw (raw egg) simply because bil had said 'no you can't have that' in his usual I'm an expert manner. Thankfully the twins were fine!

PurplePidjin · 20/05/2012 18:38

Thanks, Katie! We were planning to wait but events have somewhat overtaken us...

Yay I'm allowed smoked salmon!

PrimaBallerina · 20/05/2012 18:41

Very encouraging, thanks!

I have also eaten runny eggs, which are lion stamped so I know there's no salmonella. It wouldn't have occurred to me not to eat Crunchy Nut - sticks fingers in ears la la la!

funny you say this as I really fancied pate too, was lusting after it actually, and had some, also a crab salade!

I felt guilty but I dont get VIT A from anything else so no chance of overdosing on it - and risking listeria etc...but rick must be small.

they do over egg puddings.....i am sure one or two servings of pate wont do any harm.

ScrambledSmegs · 20/05/2012 18:50

I've been scoffing Parma ham and chorizo. The leaflet I got from the midwife said it was fine as the risks associated with eating cured meats is very low.

Wish I could have some pate though.

elizaregina · 20/05/2012 19:04

ithought the prob with cured meats is toxoplasmosis?

ScrambledSmegs · 20/05/2012 19:04

Apparently not. Just checked the NHS website too.

Dropdeadfred · 20/05/2012 19:18

here seems like shop bought isn't as dangerous as eating it from catering venues

KatieMiddleton · 20/05/2012 19:36

Oh how lovely Pidj. When are you due? I shall raise my glass of red wine to you tonight.

There was no sushi and I didn't get pâté but a small glass of red will do nicely as my daily vice.

Btw current advice says peanuts are fine. As is cooked shellfish (crab salad had been a craving here too) and smoked salmon. Yum.
