Why is bad cough, cold & runny nose so common in early pg?

I have a horrific cough, seriously violent bouts of coughing, runny nose & very run down. It just developed 2 days ago. I am 5w3d, my doctor said its a very common side effect of early pregnancy but I never heard of that. Can anyone shed some light on it for me? I am worried I am hurting my little bean with all the coughing...

I think that your immune system is lowered during early pregnancy to prevent it from attacking the baby, which allows the good old common cold to get a good grip on you. Hope you feel better soon, here, have a Brew

You're immunosupressed when pregnant hence all the advice about certain foods and such like is because you would normally fight off regular bugs and bacteria but it's harder when pg (plus some bad fior baby). So that why you're susceptible to coughs and colds.

At 5 wks, there is no way you're hurting baby when coughing so don't even worry about it :( Just take the vitamins, you'll be fine.

So in a roundabout way its a good thing to get run down as this stops my baby from being seen as a foreign object & the body trying to fight it?x
