I think that's a bit of an old wive's tale to be honest - I reckon any benefit of iron would be negated by the alcohol, especially early in pregnancy. Maybe the odd one later would be OK, but as I didn't drink at all when I was pregnant then I can't really advise you to. Sorry!

JTN · 17/02/2006 13:29

yep its just that my mum apparently drank it with us as advised by her gp - funny how things chancge with thime.

Oh yeah, my dad started trying to force it down me too. Thing is, I find Guiness pretty rank even when I'm not pregnant, so how he thought I'd fancy it when my stomach was being squished by a 9lb baby I'm not sure...

You'll have to develop a hot chocolate habit or something instead

nailpolish · 17/02/2006 13:44

sweetheart stout is better (apparently) if you can stomach it!

Rhubarb · 17/02/2006 14:09

You'll be absolutely fine! I had the odd pint when I was preggers with both of mine, and they're fine! A little alcohol is fine.

They did used to prescribe Guinness for pregnant mums in Ireland and look at their offspring. Errr, ok, not a good example!!!!

Have a pint girl! Enjoy!

Dark chocolate is good for your iron levels (as are dried apricots) Go get some Green & Blacks cooking chocolate! Good for babe too

doormat · 17/02/2006 14:33

my mum drank guinees through her last pg as she was so tired all the time
did her or my bro no harm

Christ yes!
The baby demands it.
God it's been years since i drank Guinness-used to down troughs of it as a stooodent with drunken Irish boyfriend.
It's a wonder I wasn't the size of a small cruise liner, but I managed to work it off.

Nowt wroing with the odd drink-kept me sane through the utter tedium of two pregnancies.

Had two beers or glasses of wine per week (after the first trimester) with my first and he was more than healthy the entire time; apgar score a perfect 10. When I was feeling a little guilty for indulging, my Dr. told me her friend (also an OB/GYN)was having a glass of wine every night with dinner during her pregnancy and she thought it was fine. As far as iron content ... my pregnancy vitamin has 28 mg in it. Apparently, we need our iron. Drink up!

fenny1 · 21/02/2006 20:58

I'm allowing myself two cans of Guiness a week. Stayed away from all alcohol at the beginning. Over Christmas though I felt more stressed not drinking so I don't think the odd one hurts. Be pregnant in a different decade and all the advice will have changed again anyway!

bettythebuilder · 21/02/2006 22:08

I had the occasional half a pint of guinness shandy (barmaids nightmare!) when I was pregnant, and after my blood tests my GP said I had such good results I had "blood like a rugby player"
I assume he was refering to the high iron content, not a high alcohol content...

expatinscotland · 21/02/2006 22:09

i drank it w/lemonade every now and again

Hi! I know that this thread is from 2006, but I was wondering if there was a different set of opinions these days on Guinness while pregnant? This is the best thread I could find before I have a half pint, but still not sure.

toomuchteaandcake · 13/12/2019 19:13

I've heard that Guinness in a can or by draft doesn't actually have any more iron in it than normal beer, that it's the bottled version that used to have iron? Not sure if it's correct but worth checking. Personally I'd rather completely abstain as one or two drinks would never be enough for me!

R2D2abc · 13/12/2019 19:28

I doubt Any consultant in our days will tell you to follow some old wives tales and drink alcohol for iron deficiency.

ThatKeenSquid · 31/05/2024 21:09

17 years ago I was pregnant and very anaemic my iron levels were below half what they should be and my midwife at the time told me to have a Guinness, it worked! My iron levels were good but I'm pregnant again it's already scary being 17 years but my iron levels are extremely low the tablets I have tried or been prescribed make me so ill I am willing to do anything to make sure my iorm and bloods etc are all ok I'm conflicted they change the dos and don'ts to many times but I have a beautiful healthy 17 year old with no complications

LizzeyBenett · 31/05/2024 23:24

There's no iron in Guinness that's an old wives tale . Theres only 0.3mg which is basically nothing. Be more inclined to have the zero version which has no alcohol if it's the taste you're after .
