Hi

I had diabetes through my pregnancy - also my first. I was SO scared when I found out that I was at risk. I did develop it, but it wasn't as bad as I feared. I first had to monitor the food that I ate and then had to take insulin but even that was ok - it just meant that I needed to be organised. Although it is scary at first, for the vast majority of people the diabetes goes as soon as you have given birth. Should you develop this you will be monitored and will probably have more scans later on to monitor the size of the baby and there is a chance of being induced (this happened to me) but after the initial shock of being told I had to give myself insulin I was fine, and i'm scared stiff of needles.

Just remember because you are at risk doesn't mean that you will develop it and if you do, its not the end of the world. Some of the time it can be controlled by diet, which was the worst for me as I am a hugh chocoholic and had to wean myself off. You would be more at risk of developing this in later life if you develop during pregnancy but that is much later on.

Try not to worry about it. If it happens you would only have it for a few months and then you will usually be back to normal. Just eat healthy and regularly and follow advice. Its more common that you will at first think.

Goo luck with your pregnancy

nadinetd - there are loads of threads about this if you do a search and it's really nothing to worry too much about - it is everso common. I had gestational diabetes with my second (born in Jan) and it totally freaked me out during the first few weeks but I got loads of support and info on MN. Luckily I didn't have to take insulin (many don't)and just controlled it with diet. My sugars were back to normal within a week of delivering and I was 1/2 stone lighter than pre-pg to boot so it's not all bad And, as your MW said - it's only a might - you'll be tested regularly so try not to worry until it actually happens (and think positive - you may not develop diabetes at all!!) HTH and enjoy your pregnancy

PS - writing in capitals is considered shouting

As Iris says, a) it could well be diet controlled, no need for insulin and b) you probably won't get it anyway. I had it with my second pregnany (and probably with my 1st but didn't fail the glucose tolerance test that time) and, rather bizarrely, not at all with my third. 2nd time wa the only time I was tested after the birth (10 weeks I think) and it had gone.

Don't panic

HI THERE,
I HAD DIABETES WITH MY SECOND PREGNANCY WHICH DEVELOPED AT 27WKS, I WAS SHOCKED AS I FELT FINE AND TRIED TO CONTROL IT BY WATCHING MY DIET AND TAKING MY BLOOD SUGAR READINGS EVEY 4 HRS,I LOST WEIGHT BUT MY LEVELS STILL ROSE!I ENDED UP INJECTING INSULIN 4 TIMES A DAY FOR THE REST OF MY PREGNANCY WHICH WAS STRANGE TO BEGIN WITH AND SOMETIMES MADE ME FEEL QUITE ILL AS THE AMOUNT I WAS INJECTING WAS INCREASED ON A DAILY BASIS. I GOT USED TO IT AND WAS INDUCED AT 37WKS,AFTER AN EMERGENCY C-SECTION MY SON WAS BORN WEIGHING 9LB 3OZ(IST SON WAS 7LB2OZ)MY SUGAR LEVEL RETURNED TO NORMAL WITHIN AN HOUR OF DELIVERY AND I HAD MY LONG AWAITED MARS BAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I AM NOW 10WKS PREGNANT WITH MY 3RD BABY AND WAS DIAGNOSED WITH G.D.ON FRIDAY,LOOKS LIKE IT'S TME FOR MORE INJECTIONS.
