Hiya. Ended up at hospital today. The pains in my tummy and shooting pains in my bottom were unbearable and I couldn't get off the floor and had to call my dad, was in absolute tears. Never had pain like it, besides labour pain. The out of hours nurse tested my urine and said I had a 'touch' of cystitis and gave me penicillin. She said 'hopefully that will sort u out but if you have any vaginal
Loss, phone us straight back' eh...wtf! I Am
In agony. Btw, I am
17 weeks pregnant tomorrow. Has anyone else suffered like this with a urine infection? I also have 2dc to look after, hope this goes soon!

Did they take a sample of your unrine to be tested in the lab too? I have had pain like that in the past, not while pregnant and it was a kidney infection. Penicillin would sort that put too either way.
Hope you feel better soon.

EmptyCrispPackets · 13/05/2012 20:31

Well I'm surprised that seeing as your pregnant the nurse didn't want you to be checked over by a doctor, in view of the amount of pain you are in Shock, and the fact uti's can develop into other things.

No a touch of cystitis shouldn't cause that much pain, if it's a uti then yes it could/will and more so cystitis doesn't need antibiotics. I hope she sent a sample off?

I'm actually shocked you weren't seen by a doctor.

Notmyselfatall · 13/05/2012 22:13

I am well shocked too that a doctor never saw me, I also called triage who were bloody nothing but ignorant! Told me to have a bath ( which I don't have!) In an adapted propert as my ds, age 5 is disabled, so only have a level access shower, I am also on my own, no partner and in this pain. I have had cystitis in the past but nothing like the pain I'm experiencing now. Sent me home telling me to take paracetamol! It isn't even touching the sides! Freakin joke Sad

N no, she didn't mention sending a sample away, she dipped it there and then and said ' a touch of cystitis' I've been climbing the freakin walls with the pain. I am so not impressed, I also have history of 3 early mc's which they know only too well Angry

I would go back. Doesn't sound right to me, UTIs can be very painful in pregnancy but not normally in your bottom and tummy. Its normally lower back and urethral pain when you wee (though not always the latter).

Notmyselfatall · 13/05/2012 22:22

Hiya viva, well, I got back to my mum and dad's house and was crying with the pain and my mum, dad and sister reckoned I should have been kept in. Even given IV antibiotics, so I called back triage for the THIRD time today and told them, she basically said that the baby is ok, how the fook would she know without seeing me?! Angry told me to give the antibiotics time to work and take paracetamol and have a bath, if no better by tomoro, see GP! So basically, fobbed off!!! Can't go back tonight, here on my own, dd has school, have ds to look after all day and my parents and sister are working. It's a total joke. I was on the verge of calling an ambulance earlier when I couldn't get up off the floor. Terrible treatment :(

Total sympathy! I am a life long cystitis sufferer. Ended up with kidney infection whilst pregnant. Take a wee sample to docs tomorrow to be sent off. Do NOT bath just showers. Do NOT drink cranberry, the citric acid will worsen it. Drink water not too cold, drink weak decaff tea and milk. Drink a small glass of water with a teaspoon of bicarb mixed in every hour. When you go for a wee pour water over yourself. Try rest. Ring emergency doctor if you feel worse.

Take care.

SugarBatty · 13/05/2012 22:25

Also no spicy food or onions, not too much sugar either. Bland bland bland! Try barley water too. Also lean back whilst weeing not hunched forward.

Notmyselfatall · 13/05/2012 22:26

Aww sugarbatty, I sympathise Sad . Does this level of pain sound normal to you for cystitis?? My gut instinct is a kidney infection...I'm scared for the baby. Sad I did drink cranberry cystitis sachet thingy's earlier Hmm it is sore to pee, like to sort of squeeze the last bit of pee out (sorry TMI!) is unbearable and followed by extreme pressure....

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 13/05/2012 22:27

Oh you poor thing. I sympathise. I used to get cystitis all the bloody time and cant describe how agonising it sometimes was.

Get yourself back to your doc quick smart! That does not sound right and the bath advice is bizarre (surely you'd just be sat in germs?)

In the meantime, drink loads of water/cranberry juice. Avoid caffiene & orange juice. This will hopefully 'flush out' your system, but also means that when you dash to the loo at least something comes out.

Also, and I know this sounds crazy, but it works, get a hot water bottle and put it on the soles of your feet. Somehow, magically, this stops the 'desperate' feeling. Try it. Honestly. It works. It's the only thing that kept me sane when I used to suffer.

Good luck.

Notmyselfatall · 13/05/2012 22:28

Plus I had an Indian buffet whilst our for dinner on fri night which prob hasn't helped. Will take a sample to GP tomorrow morning, if I can bloody get over there in this state :(

Mama1980 · 13/05/2012 22:28

That's awful! Sad sympathy here too cystitis sufferer myself. I second no cranberry juice, I found running warm shower water on myself helped. If you feel worse or no better call a dr again, they really in my opinion need to check for a kidney infection as the pain is so bad. I hope the pain eases soon

Notmyselfatall · 13/05/2012 22:32

Atruth, I will try all that. I will do anything. I'm just so pissed off at their lax attitude esp knowing I've had recurrent mc's. It sickens me actually...Sad
I think it is more severe than cystitis, that's just my gut feeling, think its a kidney infection. Plus, can I only take paracetamol?? Going to try and make it over to GP in morning, but it's agony just standing up Sad

OP posts:
Notmyselfatall · 13/05/2012 22:33

Aww ty mama. I just am
Shocked that they sent me home so easily Sad

OP posts:
SugarBatty · 13/05/2012 22:34

I sounds like very severe cystitis. With a kidney infection there is usually backpain or side pain. Definitely get a sample sent off. Its such a lonely illness try get some company or people to talk on the phone/text or mumsnet of course. Try as much self help as you can to releive symptoms. Drink water but don't go overboard try stagger how much your drinking. Wear loose trousers no underwear/leggings/jeans. Bicarb is really good and mallow extract too. Eat some flumps! Nothing citrus or fizzy drinks. Anti biotics should kick in and you will feel much better. Hang in there!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 13/05/2012 22:45

'just' cystitis really can be that painful I'm afraid. It also often leads to kidney infection, which is why it's so important to see GP. As others have said, antibiotics should kick in soon & you'll start feeling better. In the meantime, keep remembering that this WILL pass. Try to sleep if you can. Hugs.

Notmyselfatall · 13/05/2012 22:53

Thanks for all your kind words, really means a lot to me knowing there are ppl here to talk to and that care. Will try and sleep now. Will check
In tomorrow and let you all know how I am. Angela xx

Notmyselfatall · 15/05/2012 08:49

Well...I am
Still in serious pain with cystitis. Doubled over most of the time. Also feel wet down there (sorry tmi!) like something trickling, hope it's discharge and nothing to do with my waters Sad

OP posts:
Mama1980 · 15/05/2012 09:22

Oh ouch! I think you need to get to a and e or the dr ASAP to be honest. Antibiotics in my experience should have started to kick in by now. I do not in any way want to scare you but I had a friend whose waters leaked following a uti -her baby was fine. So I really think you should be checked again now. ((((hugs))))

SugarBatty · 15/05/2012 09:34

Please ring nhs and ask for emergency doctors to come or is there anyone who can take you up to the hospital? Or ring the midwives at the hospital where your booked if it could be your waters they will want to see you.

Take care

Notmyselfatall · 15/05/2012 11:08

Am going to hospital. Will let you's know what's happening. Xx

CupOfBrownJoy · 15/05/2012 14:24

Just a quick note for long term UTI sufferers....

I've posted about this before, but I used to suffer with almost constant UTI'S, to the point where the doctors told me there was nothing more they could do.

I did my own research and started taking these probiotics . I haven't had an infection since.

I'm not sponsored by the company or anything, I promise!! Just sharing what worked for me..... they are also safe to take during pregnancy....

Good luck OP, sounds like you've been big-time fobbed off to me Sad

EmptyCrispPackets · 15/05/2012 19:37

I'm appalled as a fellow uti sufferer and midwife that you've been fobbed off like this by a health professional.

In future, please don't call triage go straight through to a&e and refuse to leave until you've seen a doctor. Or call your midwife and explain. A nurse isn't qualified to give pregnancy advice and should be more careful IMO. I'm also shocked that a sample wasn't sent away, you could very well be on the wrong dose of antibiotics.

Furious on your behalf.
