Is lifting heavy weights like boxes of books or suitcases of clothes not a good idea? Why not if not?

Or does just depend on how fit and able you feel?

Manic depressive often remain manic for long periods (years even). It's now known as bipolar. There is a lot of literature out there on it. Possibly look for a charity called MIND. They may well be able to give you some information and talk to you about whether they think he could be suffering from this.

Don't sneeze or jump on a trampoline unless fully in control of your pelvic floor muscles Grin
Don't do anything to raise your core body temp, so stay cool when exercising and avoid saunas etc. mostly, your body will tell you if it's had enough and you should slow down. If you need to lift, be aware that your centre of gravity shifts as you get bigger, and be sure to protect your back when lifting. If women lift toddler when pregnant, the odd suitcase won't hurt!
