I was supposed to be unable to have kids. Apparently. So I was very surprised when I discovered I was pregnant. Moreover, I'm about 10 or 11 weeks, so I've been pregnant for a while without knowing.

I would have been utterly and totally delighted if it wasn't for the fact that I'm now terrified that I've done irreperable damage through alcohol.

I've not been drunk over the last few months, but I've definitely consumed alcohol every day. And quite a lot, too. My alcohol tolerance is very high and always has been. I'm a writer, so I keep odd hours and often lose track of day and night, so I can end up having the odd whiskey at weird hours most days, and a bottle of wine a couple of days a week. Obviously, not any more! But there is no escaping from the reality that I have unwittingly put the child at incredible risk.

I have an appointment booked for Monday for a pre-check at an abortion clinic (that's the only way I can get a scan quickly), but I reeeeeeeeeally don't want to terminate the pregnancy. On the other hand, I couldn't live with myself if I brought a child into the world with irreperable damage. Additionally, my husband has said that he couldn't live with me if our child was born with FAS due to my negligence, so it's a tricky situation all round Confused

I've been trying to research FAS, but am finding loads of conflicting data. My GP simply said "there's no way of knowing". I'm wondering whether anyone here has any useful experiences that they could share that might be a bit more helpful?

I think you are getting some good advice here. FAS is still not completely understood and there might be an interaction between the rest of the woman's diet, other drugs and their genetics etc. In any case it is still not a given even in very alcoholic mothers. It would very unlikely indeed if you had damaged your baby and just concentrate on being as healthy as you can from now on. I am sure it must be a shock to both you and DH but try and move forward and be excited instead!

Me and my boyfriend was discussing this the other day, the date I fell pregnant was the same day we both went out and got really stupidly drunk it was a holiday for us and we had the final night alone and that night involved ciders, shots and 3 bottles of wine, I can't even handle about 2 glasses of wine normally so I was rediciously drunk which is really rare for me! I'm going to my first midwife appointment this week so I'm going to be mentioning it to her and see what she says, I know there's nothing I can do about it now and the baby has obviously grown and as far as scans have shown the baby is a healthy size with a good heartbeat.

Well i carried a good friend out a nightclub when she was unknowingly 12 weeks pregnant with twins and they were all fine!... she was literally trollied as well and i know that wouldn't have been the only time!

Rutheyrocks It's generally better to start your own thread than reviving an old one.

Fwiw I was unknowingly pregnant in December, the booziest month of them all. DS is now 2.5y, very bright and troublesome only in a standard toddler way.

Hi there! I’m in the same situation now...I’m at 17weeks. Found out at 11 weeks but was drunk a lot in that time and drunk everyday. Haven’t drunk obviously since then. How did your situation turn out if you don’t kind me asking? I’m still on the fence about an abortion because of the damage I could have done. It’s heartbreaking as I didn’t know

Hi! I was wondering if I could get a link to the chapter of the book you were writing on FAS by chance or where I can find it? Thank you!
