Have you felt your fundus?

I'm around 14 weeks and would like to feel for my fundus. Have had a wee poke around but am not sure what I'm feeling for really.

Is there a special, recommended way of doing this and is it safe for non medical professionals to do? The prodding and poking isn't dangerous If done in the wrong way is it? I know that's probably a stupid question and have already been flamed for having an over the top 'mentality' on another thread but, hey it's my first pregnancy and I feel a little nervous/unsure Blush

I'm a midwife - 14 weeks. I thought I felt mine at 10 weeks, but actually I still can't feel it. But I am fat, and have a c/s scar in the way, so I suspect that in 2 more weeks I will be able to feel it properly! Also can't pick up a heartbeat yet!

Just feel it gently - and no, its fine to have a feel.

Next time you're at your mw appointment, ask her to show you where it is. I did Smile

I could feel the top of mine at 13 weeks. It helps if you have a not flabby tummy- mine was def easier to feel last time than this time!! Lie very flat on the floor preferably, and start at your pubic bone with the fingertips from hands. Gently feel further and further up and you should be able to feel hard ridge a littl way above the bone. At nearly 16 weeks mine is still an inch or 2 below the belly button. It is easier to feel when your bladder is very full as it lifts the uterus higher.

With dc1 I felt it at about 12 weeks but I was a size 8 with a lovely flat stomach. I don't think I'll be ale to feel it quite so early this time due to not being a size 8 and my tummy being neither lovely nor flat! Wink

Thanks ladies. Is there any way that poking about can harm the baby?

Well my DS survived! I'm fairly sure not, providing you're not hurting yourself you can't possibly be hurting the baby as they're well cushioned in there.

I agree, I think it should be fine as long as you're feeling for it and not prodding around for hours on end.

At the beginning I would just feel it in the morning before I'd had a wee. I think I stopped quite quickly as I was feeling movements from around 14-15 weeks so I knew she was still there and growing iyswim.
