ovarian cysts during pregnancy - do they cause a problem?

When I went for my 12 week scan they found that I have a cyst on both of my ovaries. One was 4cm and one was 2cm. They told me that it was something that they would keep an eye on but they didn't really explain why and I was so excited to find the scan was ok that I didn't really think about it at the time.
But now I'm worrying that it could be something that will cause problems, especially as I've now realised that the discomfort I've been feeling must be due to the cysts rather than just random aches.
Does anyone have any experience of this or know if it can cause problems in pregnancy? My DP says I'm just finding another reason to panic but I can't help worrying!

This is my 2nd pregnancy and a 6x6cm cyst was found on my ovary at 10 week scan, causing me to be referred for consultant led care.
I had a fair amount of pain with it for a few weeks and after one particularly bad night I saw the GP who said that as the uterus moved out of the pelvis, the discomfort would lessen.

At my 20 week scan last week, the cyst is completely gone, which is common apparently.

If you have bad pain see the doctor but try not to worry day to day if you can.

Thank you for the reply. I have been in quite a lot of pain today. I went on a long walk yesterday and I think it might have aggravated it. I am thinking of going to see the GP next week, just to get some more info.

Hi, I had 3 cysts in pregnancy. They normally don't cause a problem and just get monitored. If very large and suspicious looking they might be removed but not at your size. Most in pregnancy are simple benign cysts linked with hormones. Main problems tend to be the pain they cause which can mean you end up going in to get checked out more. 2 of my cysts burst during pregnancy and 1 of them twisted then burst which although very painful for me caused no problems to baby. They can press on bladder so you might feel you need to go more than usual but you should still see Dr if painful to wee.

Essentially, don't worry. Cysts in pregnancy are really common and usually go away on their own. If complications do happen it would be rare for baby to be harmed in anyway, just sore for you but tbh there's lots more pain on it's way and just like labour it doesn't last forever. Good luck

I had a small one before I was pregnant.. About 3/4cm diameter .. Had a recent scan (about three months later) and has completely gone. They didn't seem fussed in the slightest when I first mentioned about it but will just keep an eye..

my mum had one when pregnant with me and I turned out ok, but the pregnancy hormones did make it grow rather large!

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm feeling slightly reassured! My mine concern was that it would affect the baby. As long as I know the baby is ok, hopefully I will be able to cope with any discomfort/pain.

well my mum's was the size of a football apparently and didn't effect me in the slightest. I hope that makes it less of a worry.

That is not big for cysts, they will most likely settle and be gone by 20 week scan. There can be other problems like other posters said if they burst etc, or as happened to me that the whole ovary twists but that would be very unusual unless the ovary overall was significantly bigger. If you are getting pain though, especially strong pains rather than just an ache, be sure to be checked out (usually scanned) so they can keep a closer eye on them.
Just to reassure you again, the baby will not be affected by the cysts.

Hello everyone. Today i went for my first scan im 5 weeks pregnant n my dc said that there is cyst of 7cmx4cm n said to remove it. Is it ok, please help me n in diabetic

They are very common, most will go away on their own and you'll never know you had one! If you start getting pain then it needs investigating, and more uncommonly they can rupture.

I had a 10x10 cm cyst when I was pregnant, they originally thought I hadn’t emptied my bladder before my scan so kept asking me to go to the toilet again. I had some pain during the pregnancy but it wasn’t anything major. I did have a c-section though and they removed the cyst at the same time. Unfortunately it was stuck in my right tube so they had to remove that too. I’m sure you will be fine 😊
