This may be a daft question but can pregnancy tests ever be wrong? My periods are regular as clockwork and always have been. I am now approx 4 days late- i did a test on Friday night but it was negative. I'm not stressed or ill which may have gone some way to explain why my period is late. (the following may be TMI but trying to give all the info I can) I had a spot of light blood in my knickers on Thursday and so put in a tampon but when I removed it later that day it was clean.
This is not like me at all and I'm now wondering if the test was wrong or if I am starting with early menopause. I am 32 and have a history of early menopausein the family. Has anyone else got any experience of this?

Yes they can be wrong. Well my understanding is that you can have a false negative but not a false positive.

I'd take another test, with your first wee in the morning, because that's supposed to have the highest concentration of pregnancy hormones.

Thanks Flag, might do a dash to the chemist tonight and grab one ready for the morning.

I did a clear blue first response test on a thursday. Then on the sunday I did a cheap poundland one which said positive. My DD is not 15 weeks

Did 2 more tests today (just to be sure Hmm) first one was positive and the 2nd one was positive (albiet quite weak) too. Jan 13 baby for us.

I did about 5 tests before finally getting a bfp. I was nearly a week late by that time & just knew but tests kept coming back negative.

Yawner247 · 07/05/2012 20:01

Hello but of a cheeky hijacking....does breastfeeding affect the pregnancy test?! I read somewhere that if you are still bf then the excess hormones may be secreted in BM?! Does anybody know how true this is?!

NarcolepsyQueen · 07/05/2012 20:20

Congratulations! I didn't get a BFP until a week after my AF was due.

Nobhead · 07/05/2012 20:37

Thanks guys- early days yet but getting a bit excited (and nervous too!)

Bf has never affected my pregnancy tests! I've had positive pregnancy tests in 4 pregnancies while breastfeeding, all before my period was due.

Pregnancy tests detect the presence of the hormone HGC in urine. HGC has absolutely nothing to do with bf.

Yawner I suspect thats a myth.

Nobhead Congratulations I assume? You don't say wether this is a happy occasion or not. Either way at least you know now and can make plans whatever they may be Smile

BlueAndRedMakePurple · 07/05/2012 20:41

X-post! Grin

It is a very happy occasion- excited but a bit nervous. This will be our 2nd- DS will be 4 in July. I found adjusting to motherhood very difficult, had an awful labour and birth, felt like shite for at least 6 months after he was born and he was very colicky for the first 3 months. It has got much easier the older he has got and we love him to bits, he's the best thing in our life. I just keep telling myself it can't possibly be any worse than it was with DS.

I failed 9!! And was three months before I got a positive Confused

Yawner247 · 07/05/2012 21:35

Congratulations nobhead Grin
Other posters I did think most likely myth as I can't seem to find any info! I asked because I've posted lately as I've gradually put weight on an haven't been over indulging..we have been ttc since new year and have had plenty of feelings of pregnancy...but four negative tests, my dh even says that my tummy looks like I'm pregnant and he wouldn't say it unless he thought it! And the general consensus from Aibu to ask if I'm a heffer was generally yes if you've poas four times with negative outcomes Grin glorious!!

Reenypip · 07/05/2012 22:11

I did a pregnancy test when I was about 2 weeks late, it was negative, so I assumed I wasn't pregnant and thought it was pcos playing up.
But another month later, still no period, and was getting a lot of pain. I thought I'd test just to rule it out again, and it was positive! I had an emergency scan coz of the pain and turns out I was 9 weeks pregnant.

PestoPenguin · 07/05/2012 22:14

Yawner -you could go to the GP and ask for a blood test to check. There have been stories on MN before of the POAS tests failing to show positive for months (just not related to bf).

PestoPenguin · 07/05/2012 22:17

Oh yes, and congratulations OP Grin Blush
