Why am I feeling so sick already? Unfair!

I'm only 3 and a half weeks pregnant. I got a positive test on Thursday AFTER almost throwing up in the car driving home from school...and thinking 'hmm'...and since then I have been feeling as sick as a dog, only on and off so far but still...is this it now? Am I in for the even longer haul, or hurl I suppose, than usual?

I know it didn't start till I was 5 and a half weeks, last time, and once it did it was pretty bad and I was on medication etc. I also had a bad time with my first baby who is now nearly 9.

I'm already taking meds this time. Trying to hold out as long as possible and have so far resisted throwing up, but the nausea is fairly annoying, and I'm afraid it will get worse/be twins. you know the sort of thing.

Has anyone else had sickness this soon, and if so, did it carry on or did it sort of fade out after a while? [straw clutching]

Thankyou girls
and honesty appreciated, even if it's not good!

Are your sure your dates are right? Could you be further along?
Sorry to say but I also thought twins too!

Good luck, hopefully someone with some actual practical advise will come along soon Smile

Hello, thankyou for answering...pretty sure dates are good as I was charting, and also testing before I got my positive. I'm fairly sure I'd have had a positive test before that if I'd conceived last month...also I had a normal period in between so it's unlikely iyswim.

It's got to be either multiple babies or just bad luck/starting earlier/ etc...

I don't mind so much if it's two babies though I think DP will absolutely freak Grin

I'm having twins and didn't have bad morning sickness. Was queasy and off food from weeks 5-14 but was never actually sick so count myself lucky. One of my friends was so ill with both her single babies that she was hospitalised once in her first pregnancy and at least twice in her second. Her ms definitely got worse in her second pregnancy. She's sworn off trying for a third!!

I'm not sure it has much to do with how many babies you are having but think it is the luck of the draw as to how your body reacts. Sorry, probably not what you want to hear!

gardenpixies32 · 06/05/2012 12:01

I was sick right from the beginning. I found out at about 3 weeks and the nausea and sickness started at about 4 weeks. I found out last Tuesday I am having twins! Explained it all.

I'm honestly believing more and more that it's all completely random. I was pregnant 6 years ago (didn't continue with the pregnancy) and was sick every single day at 5am like clockwork, retched and was sick until 8am and that was it done for the day. Every single day, the exact same thing.

This time, it was completely different - intermittent sickness and dizzy spells throughout the day but not every day, completely random vomiting - could go weeks, then a phase of killer heart burn at 6-9pm every single night for 4 weeks.

I was just today hit with diarrhea and sweating so bad you'd think I had food poisoning. It hit me for an hour, was extremely intense - think something akin to Delhi Belly, then passed as if it never happened. A surge of pregnancy hormones, apparently.

My mum when pregnant with my brother was sick at 7am every morning, without fail but generally fine after that. With me, she was ill ALL day long.

So I don't think you can go by anything you had in previous pregnancies, or what other women have. I feel for you because it seems so early :( But in terms of trying to make sense of it, I don't think you can :)

Thankyou for the responses, and congratulations to all of you...lots of twins seem to be happening at the moment! Smile

I think you're right Betty, perhaps it is just random. My first two though were boys, and I felt randomly sick nearly all the time with them, though I wasn't sick.It was really hard to cope with. Now my boys are older though I am alone all day which I think helps a lot, as I don't have to do anything much or be anything or look after anyone - then when the evening comes it's DP and both the kids but by then I'm hoping it'll have eased off a little bit. Mornings seem to be worse atm.

I am aware though that it hasn't really hit yet - that's what's worrying me as if it's this bad now, what'll it be like in a week or two - there is always the risk I think with every pregnancy that it will go one way or the other.

I am really happy and grateful to be having this baby though which I think helps as I have a positive attitude this time, and that kind of ameliorates the negative bits.

Hope you start to feel better soon Smile

IslaValargeone · 06/05/2012 14:38

I got bad sickness at 3 weeks, and was largely incapacitated until 17 weeks.
It did improve but was sick on a daily basis until the end. No twins though.
First and only child however.
Hope you feel better soon, it's not nice, and you have my sympathies.

ScrambledSmegs · 06/05/2012 14:50

Congratulations! Could be twins, could just be that you're older now and your body is reacting more strongly to those pregnancy hormones. Do take the medication, there's nothing to be gained from punishing yourself - you've got two active children and a full life to lead!

About being sure of the dates though... here's my story:

I had bad sickness at 3 weeks, tested then and got my BFP. Had an early scan at 7 weeks on monday (offered by fertility clinic, I'd been referred) and got the shock of my life when instead of a flickering heartbeat, I saw a baby! My dates were re-calculated to 11+3.

I know this sounds crazy, but I'd had a proper, normal period with normal flow. I'd had a BFN on a cheapie test prior to the period. I also went on to have an HSG on supposed CD12, and was using the Clear Blue Fertility Monitor which showed I was ovulating Hmm

I'm still sick but quite pleased that it's going to be over sooner rather than later!

RandomMess · 06/05/2012 14:57

I reckon it's triplets Wink

Flightty · 06/05/2012 15:50

Oh cheers Random Grin

Baby...sorry you have been feeling so poorly. Unsympathetic doctors really annoy me. I had one originally and now have got the nicest sort possible, luckily.

Thankyou Isla...sorry to hear it was so tough for you.

Scrambledsmegs - wow! Really?
I'm wondering now as my internet cheap tests were showing only very very faint lines till now - still very faint - they're rubbish I think. The positive I got on my other test was quite good.

Hmm. I would LOVE to find out I was 7 weeks instead of 3, sadly I reckon it's unlikely, as I'm not that lucky Grin but I will try one of those estimator tests I think and see what it says.

Do they measure up to 7 weeks?

RandomMess · 06/05/2012 15:52

I used those cheapie tests - they were brill!

I felt ill/sick much earlier with each pregnancy but it didn't get that much worse as an overall experience IYSWIM.

Flightty · 06/05/2012 15:52

Oh just looked it up, they tell you when you conceived don't they? In which case if it's 3+ I'll be surprised.

OP posts:
Flightty · 06/05/2012 15:53

Random I am really glad you said that. I think it's kind of the best outcome really, that it isn't worse than last time! I seem to remember both times were equally awful!

OP posts:
RandomMess · 06/05/2012 15:54

If you are only 3 weeks pregnant that means you only conceived a week ago - I suspected I was pregnant before my period was due but that is fairly unusual I should think?

Flightty · 06/05/2012 17:00

I'm not due on till tomorrow Random Grin but I tested last Thursday and got a positive....that's weird...

anyway I just dashed out and got a conception indicator test (how much!) and it says, here and now at 5pm (when it isn't meant to be totally accurate) that it's 2-3 weeks.

2 weeks ago is CD11 of my cycle, and that was when I got the first stirrings of a positive OPK, but Fertility friend has me down for ovulating on CD13. Maybe I ovulated on CD10 just before my first temp spike. I dunno...depends how accurate OPKs are I guess!

But anyway, I don't think I'm 7 weeks, sadly. Wouldn't that be marvellous...Smile

Thankyou for all your time and help, girls.

OP posts:
Flightty · 06/05/2012 17:02

However it does make me 4-5 weeks! yay for that - got to be better to feel sick at 4-5 weeks than 3-4 Smile Oh its the little things...
