Do you think some brands of pregnancy vitamins can make you feel sick?

I've been taking Tesco own brand vitamins for pregnancy up until this point (19 weeks) and I recently ran out so haven't taken any for a week. They are the gel capsule type.

Just been to Sainsburys and bought some there and took it a couple of hours ago and now feel a bit sicky. Haven't had any sickness since about 13/14 weeks so wondering if it's the tablet. These are the dry (if broken up it would be powdery) type.

Not sure what to think.

I came on here to post exactly the same question! I am suffering terribly with nausea. It is all day long and I feel awful. I feel even worse after taking a prenatal vitamin and am wondering if I should give them up? I have tried 2 brands and the same result with both.

I am only 8 weeks so nervous about getting folic acid etc for the baby at this stage.

Also not sure what to think.

I found the same but taking them at night seems to make it better.

Littlemissimpatient · 06/05/2012 08:37

I would second taking them at night

I found that Pregnacare made me very nauseous no matter what time of day I took them. I then tried the Sanatogen ones and they were much better. I took them at night and had no nausea from thrm at all.

Thanks! Glad I'm not imagining it.

I may try it again tonight and if I get the same result I'll go back to the tesco ones which didn't have the same effect. These sainsburys tablets are very similar in look to the pregnacare ones I took with my daughter so perhaps it's the same sort of feeling.

I think the tesco ones are these, and they didn't make me feel sick if that's any help.

I used to feel sick if I didn't take them with food (i.e. a meal, not just a snack) and in fact vommed on two different occasions after taking one on an empty stomach.

I think it's the pregnancy that's the issue, rather than the pills per se, but if different ones don't cause nausea then great!

FatimaLovesBread · 06/05/2012 09:46

I know the pregnacare ones say take after a main meal, I think that's to prevent nausea.

Grumpla · 06/05/2012 09:48

Always made me feel sick (whichever brands) unless I took them last thing at night.

BUT I think that was usually because I could eat a decent dinner whereas breakfast and lunch often didn't happen

Birdies · 06/05/2012 09:49

i had exactly the same thing. i was taking Pregnacare before i was pregnant and felt sick if i didn't have them with a main meal.

Any tablets containing iron can make you feel nauseous. Best taken at night or with a meal.

I bought Asda folic acid when TTC & then decided to switch to Wilko & Superdrug pg vits (they were both on offer). Can't remember which 1 I took but they made me queasy when I took them on an empty stomach.

I now take either one with my dinner at night, during the meal, with plenty of water & feel fine (apart from the usual MS).

I think taking with food helps with nausea & absorption of the nutrients.

I keep forgetting to take my vitamins now I am past the weeks of needing folic acid. I had my bloods back at 16 weeks and the MW said she'd never seen iron levels so high...she asked me what vits I was taking and I sheepishly said I keep forgetting. But I eat a ton of liver and lots of dark leafy greens so maybe that's it?

Up to 12 weeks I felt so sick anyway I don't know if I could have pinpointed the vitamins anyway.

Chunkychicken · 06/05/2012 13:27

Didn't think you were meant to eat liver during pg Bettybat as vit A can accumulate in the foetus... Maybe I'm wrong & that rule has changed too!!

ScrambledSmegs · 06/05/2012 13:29

Pregnacare made me very ill no matter what time of day I took them. they also made me so constipated that I could barely eat at all. I got tired of it so switched to Sanatogen and feel loads better.

Still have bad nausea but some days I'm only sick once and don't feel so weak anymore - I'm 12+2 so fx not going to be ill for too much longer. Unless I forget and take Pregnacare again, that is...

LoveInAColdClimate · 06/05/2012 13:34

Pregnacare made me nauseous. Boots own brand were fine.

Littlemissimpatient · 06/05/2012 14:09

When has everyone stopped taking folic acid and vits? Do you stop at 12 weeks or take for full length of pregnancy?

bettybat · 06/05/2012 15:12

Chunkychicken MW didn't seem shocked when I told her...especially I was raving how amazing it is - it's from the local Lebanese restaurant, and they cook it in pomegranates!

I'm sure she would have said something if it was a big no no. I also mentioned it to the booking in MW and she didn't say anything or raise an eyebrow. She seemed impressed with what I was eating - lots of protein, tons of oily fish, LOTS of good fats, leafy greens, eggs, vegetables etc.

I dunno - I lost more confidence in seeing how pregnancy food fads changed by the professionals over the years than eating so called bad things. They can't decide on a damn thing so why would I trust them? I went through a period of obsessing over fish, raw vegetables (particularly raw spinach) and liver that I figured my body was needing/wanting something in all of that stuff so I should listen!
