I am having my 3rd tomorrow at 13+5 after being referred to EPU after some spotting. Had a private reassurace scan at around 8+3 and then my 12 week scan last week.

Starting to worry this is too many and will hurt my baby in some way after doing some googling (I know, I know). I realise I don't HAVE to have scan tomorrow but def want the reassurance that all is ok (fingers crossed about that) and to find out what may have caused the spotting, which thankfully has now stopped.

I'll be having a 20 week scan obviously and, touch wood, no need for any more so was wondering if to have 4 or more was fairly common?

Did you have more than this? Anyone go the whole pregnancy without a scan? I have heard of women doing this and found it very interesting - not sure I'd ever be brave enough. It seems to be quite an interesting yet controversial topic.

I had scans every 4 weeks til 20 weeks, then every two weeks til 32 weeks, then weekly. It was a multiple birth, so they were keeping an eye on things.

Ultrasound will not harm your baby.

nannyn · 03/05/2012 11:07

I've had 7 this pregnancy, due 1 more before due date. My extra ones have been due to a medical trial, they picked up low amniotic fluid & a slow down in growth. Thankfully everything is ok but had I not had scans who know what would have happened.

Whysoserious · 03/05/2012 11:07

Wow - is that pretty standard with multiples ThighsTheLimit? I bet it's lovely getting to see your babies so frequently Smile

Nannyn - yes it's for things like that that I wonder how people can refuse them. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy

About 8 with DS1. He had some soft markers picked up at 20 wks so we were scanned about every 3-4 weeks after that to check he was ok. He was fine. Got them to print some interesting poses off for us as we had so many scans, like one of his face close-up. :)

Aworryingtrend · 03/05/2012 11:11

I had had 4 scans by the time I got to 13+5. I'm now 15+6 and don't expect to have any more apart from the 20 week scan.

A friend of mine who is diabetic and TTC has been told by her drs that when she gets pregnant she will be scanned every 4 weeks so it must be safe to have that many.

trilottie · 03/05/2012 11:12

I've had 4 so far, the 4th was my 12 week scan a couple of weeks ago. First one at 6 weeks as i was worried about a mmc after last year, then 2 private ones then the 12 week one. Can't wait til my 20 week one! There's no evidence to suggest they harm your baby.

exexpat · 03/05/2012 11:12

I lost track with DC2. I was scanned at least once a month from 6 weeks onwards (had previous molar pregnancy so was under close supervision to rule out another), and probably more frequently in the final few weeks as she was large and late. But that was in Japan and scans at every appointment are fairly standard in large hospitals.

I don't think there has every been any reliable research to show that ultrasound scans cause any harm to the baby.

randomimposter · 03/05/2012 11:15

Am nearly 18 weeks and have had 6 so far due to previous MC history and age.

Ultrasound will not harm your baby.

This bump seems to have been scanned more times than a barcode :o - currently on 7 scans I think, due to several bleeds and a hospital stay, and have another one booked in for 36wks (currently 27wks).

I'd had three scans by 13wks, too, so try not to worry. I'm sure they wouldn't put the baby at harm.

ragged · 03/05/2012 11:21

You know you're being silly, though I understand why. Scans are expensive so they don't do them for pleasure, only when there's possible or real medical need.

DS is 12yo & I must have had them with him at:
12, 22, 23, 24?, 28, 32, 36... plus one after birth. ( OH, the joys of false alarms in pregnancy.) 6 or 7 scans, anyway.
So I totally get why people refuse them completely, the stress of the false alarm was pretty awful, I could have done without all that. There's a lot to be said for not letting them try so hard to find a problem, any problem. There's so much they can't do to fix any problem they might find, too.

We had an argument about the printer this morning, but DS is a pretty good kid otherwise. No scan after effects :).

Aworryingtrend · 03/05/2012 11:28

Grin at barcode baby!

iseenodust · 03/05/2012 11:28

I was scanned fortnightly from 20 weeks through to 39 so I reckon 9.

DS is normal - well for this family Grin

lagartija · 03/05/2012 11:33

In spain it is routine to have 3, if not 4 on the public health system: 12 weeks to confirm pg/mult or singleton/nuchal fold, 20 weeks for abnormalities, 32 wks for growth and then 40 wks if not gone into labour to check placenta.
This time I had 12 wks, 14 weeks privately due to possibly having an amnio, 16 weeks with an amnio, 17 weeks by midwife, 20 weeks, 32 weeks and then the 40 wks was programmed too early, so had that at 38 weeks, so that was 7. If you go private in spain you have one pretty much every month.

belfaft1981 · 03/05/2012 11:58

I was wondering about this too. On my paperwork it says something like although scanning is thought to be safe it is best to limit no of scans especially with newer equipment. I will have had 3 scans by 20 weeks and I have been told I may need to have growth scans towards the end due to high BMI. Wondering whether that is really necessary now.

DarrowbyEightFive · 03/05/2012 12:08

It's absolutely normal in Germany to have a scan each time you visit your gynecologist for a check-up - I probably had 8 or 9 in each pregnancy. Plus a high-definition scan at 20 weeks carried out by a specialist each time as there is a low genetic risk of a particular abnormality which would require surgery.

Not only is there no risk of scans causing any damage, I would guess that it leads to far fewer problems in later pregnancy and during the birth itself, as the scans are more likely to reveal problems before they become critical. I think late scans are used to estimate the baby's weight and size, and if there is a real discrepancy between baby and hip size, a planned CS is recommended - surely better than getting stuck half way through labour.

DuelingFanjo · 03/05/2012 12:16

I had six I think, including the nuchal and the one during the amnio. Because of the ivf.

CommanderShepard · 03/05/2012 12:17

3 scans of baby - nowhere near some of you! - plus a bonus kidney scan. Was really interesting but there was ultrasound gel everywhere once they'd finished.

bruffin · 03/05/2012 12:24

With DS i had the normal 12week, then 20 week but then weekly from 32 weeks as I was hospitalised from 32 weeks with pre eclampsia.

With DD I had an amnio so had extra scans for that.

bigkidsdidit · 03/05/2012 12:27

I had 5 or 6 - normal 2 for the baby and more for a growing dermoid cyst they were keeping an eye on

KatAndKit · 03/05/2012 12:47

I had 8 scans in total. 3 first trimester scans, the normal 20 week scan, a private 4d scan, and 3 third trimester growth scans.

toodles · 03/05/2012 12:55

Well in Greece, if you go private as most people do, you'll be scanned at every appointment, i.e. monthly. The first gyn/ob I had here, 14 yrs ago, knew the top gyn/ob on the NHS, a fellow Greek or Cypriot, and he told me the reason the NHS only did the standard 12 week and 20 week scan was because of cost.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 03/05/2012 12:55

I am scanned every 2 weeks Smile

RickGhastley · 03/05/2012 12:56

3x in early pregnancy unit due to v heavy bleeding
1x routine12 week scan
5x every 2/3 weeks from 12-24 weeks due to poss cervix problems
1x routine 20 week scan
1x32 week scan due low lying placenta
1x36 week growth scan due to ginormous baby
1xscan on day of delivery as part of study I was in

That makes about 13 scans I think!

DS does not seem to have suffered!
