I am having my 3rd tomorrow at 13+5 after being referred to EPU after some spotting. Had a private reassurace scan at around 8+3 and then my 12 week scan last week.

Starting to worry this is too many and will hurt my baby in some way after doing some googling (I know, I know). I realise I don't HAVE to have scan tomorrow but def want the reassurance that all is ok (fingers crossed about that) and to find out what may have caused the spotting, which thankfully has now stopped.

I'll be having a 20 week scan obviously and, touch wood, no need for any more so was wondering if to have 4 or more was fairly common?

Did you have more than this? Anyone go the whole pregnancy without a scan? I have heard of women doing this and found it very interesting - not sure I'd ever be brave enough. It seems to be quite an interesting yet controversial topic.

Even if there was a slight query over the safety, if you have a complicated pregnancy it is better to have the scan than to let the problem go undetected with possibly tragic results.

If you are having a normal uncomplicated pregnancy then the two routine scans ought to be perfectly safe.

I am scanned every 4 weeks and had an extra 20 week scan in between week 18 and 22. I live abroad and have private healthcare and regular scanning is normal. i've had 6 so far and I'm 21 weeks.

I must have had more than 20 scans. I had a scan at 6 weeks and then one every week until about 20 weeks, then at least one every two weeks, plus a couple of private scans. They scanned me lots because I lost twins last year at 20 weeks and was super paranoid about something going wrong again. Plus I had various episodes of bleeding.

I had thought that scans had been shown to cause neurological problems in mice... so they are looking at autism, dyslexia, maybe even schizophrenia etc as being possible problems.
That, and the way many babies seem to flinch/try and move from the vibrations/heat or whatever they feel from the process.

I'd be happy to know it's just bad science stuff though, as DowagersHump says (I haven't researched it at all).

I agree with
"if you have a complicated pregnancy it is better to have the scan than to let the problem go undetected with possibly tragic results. "
totally.
But I would avoid having scans for entertainment as I say.

10 with DD. 4 before 11 weeks (history of mmc)
another 2 at 19 weeks (suspected DVT)
then it took 4 between 20-24 weeks to do all the checks they usually do at the 20 week scan due to the position she insisted on lying in every time we went.
She is now 2 and is very robust!
