I am having my 3rd tomorrow at 13+5 after being referred to EPU after some spotting. Had a private reassurace scan at around 8+3 and then my 12 week scan last week.

Starting to worry this is too many and will hurt my baby in some way after doing some googling (I know, I know). I realise I don't HAVE to have scan tomorrow but def want the reassurance that all is ok (fingers crossed about that) and to find out what may have caused the spotting, which thankfully has now stopped.

I'll be having a 20 week scan obviously and, touch wood, no need for any more so was wondering if to have 4 or more was fairly common?

Did you have more than this? Anyone go the whole pregnancy without a scan? I have heard of women doing this and found it very interesting - not sure I'd ever be brave enough. It seems to be quite an interesting yet controversial topic.

I am 15+2 and I have had 15 scans Grin. This is because it is ivf pregnancy, so I had 3 before my normal 12 week one, then I had emergency surgery so I had a bunch more after that. Today I was offered one at a routine appointment as they didn't want to frighten me by not being able to find heartbeat on Doppler. I will only get one more though now everything seems back to normal, the one at 20 weeks. At no point has anyone raised any potential issues with this, so I'm not worried.

TooManyBubbles · 03/05/2012 13:37

I had loads starting at 7 weeks up until the werk before my twins were born. I lost track a bit but possibly 8 or 9. Very regular scans are standard for multiple births. Some women have fortnightly scans (particularly for id twins).

Im 22 weeks and have had 3 scans before 12 weeks at epau due to previous recurrent mcs and bleeding in thispregnancyy! A private scan at 10 weeks due to more bleeding, my sched 12 week scan, scan at 14 weeks due to spotting, scan at 18 weeks due to suspected leaking of waters (all fine now thank god) and 20 week scan so far!

So that's 8 so far omg we've got a private 4d sexing scan at 25 weeks, and have growth scans booked for 29 and 35 weeks due to low bmi and low birth rates running in the family!

Im not worrying about too many scans! I asked about the risk and they said its really low, this has been a pretty stressful pregnancy so far seeing our baby healthy at each scan instantly took the worry of the risks away:-)

Good luck op, try not to stress to much not good for you or baby xx

I had a lot of scans with DD and tbh while she has had physical problems I am certain they are nothing to do with her scans. A scan saved her brother's life so I really think you shouldn't worry. Everyone wants the best for their baby and lots of people have worries that turn out to be unfounded. Try and enjoy your pregnancy. If you want the reassurance you may have to deal with some worry - but really, you don't need too Smile.

McKayz · 03/05/2012 13:54

I will have had 7 by the end of this pregnancy.

DowagersHump · 03/05/2012 13:56

I think I had about 10 scans in my last one. DS is disgustingly hale and hearty :)

wonkylegs · 03/05/2012 14:01

In a 36 wk pregnancy I had 10 US scans + 1 X-ray due to pre existing medical condition. The x ray was scary but necessary and I had to wear a really heavy lead apron to protect bump. The scans were kinda nice as I got to see that DS was doing ok, even though I knew he was at a higher risk due to my condition and meds... I got to see him at 35 weeks and then he surprised me by coming early at 36 weeks, well as much surprise as a 4 day labour can be.

Your baby will be fine, scans are to monitor your baby's progress and foetal health will not be risked unnecessarily.

Combinearvester · 03/05/2012 14:08

I had one at 7, 9 and 12 weeks then was scanned every 2 weeks until 24 weeks then one at 28, 32 and 36 weeks.

So about 12 in all? There may have been more, I had a couple of false alarms.

DC is a bit funny looking tbh Grin But DC1 only got scanned about 6 times and he is the left handed freak more unusual child.

BuntyCollocks · 03/05/2012 15:55

I had an early scan, 1 at epu, 12 week, 15 week because we moved and were registering with a new trust, a gender scan, 2 x 20 week because dc1 was a bugger and wouldn't move so they could see the four chambers during the first 20 week scan, and a 4d scan.

So ... 8. Wow.

Jules125 · 03/05/2012 16:00

I had 14 scans in total with DD2 (previous mcs and previous early severe pre-eclampsia - my first DD died - then she was lying transverse).

DD2 is healthy and great - don't worry

goingmadtrying · 03/05/2012 16:33

another multiple pregnancy im scanned every 2 weeks and have been since about 10 weeks also had one at 6 weeks and a gender scan privately at 16 weeks!!! my consultant scans are quite quick now, she did mention that putting the colour on to show blood flow in first trimester not done routinely due to having to be more powerful, don't worry and enjoy your scan tomorrow.x

CupOfBrownJoy · 03/05/2012 20:15

Over here (Germany) I'll be scanned every 2 weeks by the gynae, first scan was at 6 weeks. No complications (so far!), its just routine.

NoKnownAllergies · 03/05/2012 20:23

DH says 15 I say 12. Blush I can't remember. We are very high rsk due to previous abnormalities. DS is fine and dandy. :)

I'm off to check my notes!

AceOfBase · 03/05/2012 20:28

I think it was about 28 with dd :o and maybe 24 with ds. I had cholestasis both times from 25 weeks and had two scans a week until delivery plus all the usual ones plus extra when i was an inpatient (which happened all too often)

Why on earth am I having another Confused :o

ellangirl · 03/05/2012 20:30

You win ace!

Catsycat · 03/05/2012 20:34

6 this pg so far, viability at 7 weeks due to previous mc, 11 weeks / nuchal, 12 weeks due to a small bleed, 20 weeks anomaly scan, 28 and 35 weeks growth scans. No more planned now at 36 +4.

DD1 had 3 (12 & 20 weeks, 42 weeks as part of monitoring).

DD2 had just the 12 & 20 week ones.

The only effect of increased scanning I've ever heard of is one study where boys were found to be left handed slightly more often after more scans Hmm, but I don't know if this finding was ever proven, and even if it was it's hardly a problem!!!

I think the benefits of scanning generally outweigh the risks, and with NHS budgets being what they are, I think the chance of being scanned unnecessarily is probably small.

AceOfBase · 03/05/2012 20:35

:o :o :o
I'll get back to you when dc3 is delivered (not sure when but I'm aiming for 36 weeks as i had 32 then 34 so it would be a nice pattern) I know I am likely to get ill this time, well more than likely, so i will probably have numerous scans again and if i can make it to my magic date of 36 it could be over 30 scans this time Shock

Catsycat · 03/05/2012 20:38

Now that is imppressive Ace. Good luck (hope you're really lucky and don't get ill again though) :)

Sandalwood · 03/05/2012 20:40

I know they just don't know about whether or not scans are harmful, so I would definitely avoid having them for entertainment.
But weighing up the risks (I had to have a couple of extra later ones because of placenta praevia) it seemed better to see what was going on.

AceOfBase · 03/05/2012 20:42

Thankyou although its pretty much a done deal as my liver function didn't go back to normal after dd but hey shit happens right :o

Benaberry · 03/05/2012 22:45

I had 7 with DS - two early ones due to bleeds at about 7 and 9 weeks, then 12 weeks, 20 weeks, 22 weeks (repeat anamoly as awkward position previously), 28 weeks & 32 weeks (growth scans as ? over size - potential giant baby!)

Had 4 so far with this one, 9 weeks, 12 weeks, 20 weeks and a growth scan this morning at 27+3 - with at least one more to come.

Like exexpat, I don't think there's been any reliable research to say that ultrasound is anything other than safe - try not to worry :)

Chunkychicken · 04/05/2012 09:58

I have only ever had the standard scans but I just wanted to emphasise that they are safe. Bear in mind that scans were introduced in the early 80s so there would be a lot of data/adults by now that had been scanned and are doing fine. I would imagine there is a concern if you're carrying a whale as US may affect their navigation, but for mere humans, its just sound waves.Grin They have to say 'limit the number' for numerous reasons, one being cost, so I don't imagine you have to worry too much. Good luck :)

Sandalwood · 04/05/2012 12:09

You're all very confident. I really thought there was a query over the safety of them.

DowagersHump · 04/05/2012 13:21

Nothing more concrete than most bad science type stuff, Sandalwood - I researched it pretty thoroughly.
