Well I've never had a cold sore but 2days ago 2 little spots appeared on my bottom lip not really sore but tingles a bit. Was wandering as I have been told they can be dangerous to a unborn baby if never had them before. Is this true and has anyone ever got them for the 1st time during pregnancy. If so is there anything I can I put on it?
TIA x

Oh and I'm 26wks.

I think the danger is mainly when the baby is born and out and if you have a live virus at the time- passing it on via kissing etc.

My daughter had septicemia and when she got to hospital a few doctors asked if she had been in contact with anyone with a cold sore. Her illness was not from that, but GBS, but I remember it was something they queried.

I remember at the time a baby had recently died from a cold sore virus. Here is the story:www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1081076/Did-I-kill-baby-kiss-How-anguished-mother-didnt-discover-danger-common-cold-sore-virus-late-.html

I'd just check it out with your doctor or midwife and perhaps they can reassure you and prescribe/ recommend some cream/medication.

Yes, dangerous to a newborn. But I don't think you need to worry at your stage. Just something to be aware of if you are prone to in case you get one when the baby arrives. I only know this because DD had the cold sore virus in her mouth (called herpetic stomatitis) when DS was born and we had to be very careful to keep them apart.

I also thought it was dangerous for newborns, and neonatal nurses had to call in sick if they had them, never heard of it being dangerous in pregnancy but worth checking out if worried

if you don't wanna call up your own midwives you can call or email a Tommy's midwife:
