I am thirty five wks. Last two to four weeks breathless and last two weeks calf pain where varicose veins are. Saw gp tday went to hospital. They ruloed out dvt as leg doppler ok, chest xray clear too. But booked for perfusion scan tmrw am and have had blood thinner. Thing is I have always had breathing issues due to mild asthma and anxiety. Dr says best to rule out pulmonary embelism but radiation poses tiny risk to bany of affecting cells I suppose carcinogenic? Risk one in million. However if have scan and its just anxiety or due to being in third trimester I have put baby at unecessary risk. I am breathless but cld be other explanation. They r veering on side of caution but I am not sure whether to have it or not. Pls any advice welcome as scan imminent.

The radiation used is low for those, and you will only be given half an adult dose to keep it even lower still. Reaction to the drugs used is pretty well unheard of. I have seen at least a thousand of these tests and never once seen a reaction. Really, the risks are very very small indeed. The risk to both of you from an undiagnosed PE however is rather more substantial. If you're still very unsure you may want to check with them how they would change your management if they do find one since you're on anticoagulants already, they may even be happy to wait until you have delivered, but if you are planning to breastfeed you would have to stop doing so for 24 hours. Personally I would go ahead in the morning and not worry about it. These tests are very safe. Wishing you all the best.
