Just had presentation scan and baby is 6lb 10oz at 36 wks. What rough birth size should I expect at 40 weeks?

My first baby was 8lb 13oz and was born at 42 weeks. I'm 36wks + 3days and today the baby's weight is estimated at 6lb 10 oz. Does anyone have any idea what size baby I can expect if I go at 40weeks or even 42? I hope the baby isn't too big! The good thing is that he/she is head down thank god.

I think they say they put on half a pound each week at this stage. However, dd was estimated 7lb at 36 weeks and was 8lb when born the next day [frin]

A basic principal of biology is that your body won't make a bigger baby than can get through your pelvis - otherwise the genes that code for a baby bigger than your pelvis wouldn't be passed on... Bodies are clever like that. The only complicating factor is if you labour, for one reason or another, in a position that doesn't maximise the size of your pelvis, or if you've got a pelivc defect. Positions that reduce the size of your pelivs include the classic 'flat on your back' position... The fact that you've got one nice sized baby out means that you should be fine though!

In terms of size of this baby the scans are notoriously unreliable at late stage - as spotty says.. About 1-1.5 lb out in some cases - either bigger or smaller! So if they're saying your baby is currently 6lb 10oz it could actually currently be anything from just over 5lb to just under 8lb in size now... It'll put on about half a pound a week in the last few weeks so you could give birth to a baby any where between 7lb and 10lb.... does that help?

FWIW I've just had a growth/presentation scan at 36 weeks too. My baby is estimated at 7lb 10 at the moment.... First baby was 10lb 6oz though so we're expecting another big one... :)

Good luck!
