Newborn look really big or am I just finding something else to worry about? Wondering whether to buy some small baby. Baby measured fine at all appointments so no real concern over size and have growth scan tomorrow (36wks) to confirm but I know these are not all so accurate with weight which is the sizing guide on clothes. I am assuming having a stock of newborn is fine and they may be a little loose but that is fine too? Or would you go buy some?

Definitely just get newborn, I think small baby are just for premature babies?

AdiVic · 30/04/2012 14:12

Hello - I doubt you would need small baby if you are at 36 weeks and all is measuring fine. My 1st baby was too big for Newborn size within 2 weeks, and she was 8lb when born, so not as big as they can come. Like you said having some newborn size is fine - if they were loose the baby won't mind:) Just as long as he/she gets lots of cuddles from you. Say if they were too small, or too big, someone can always nip out and get a pack. Not long to go - good luck:)

i had a few sleepsuits in asda first size which are upto 9lb and dd1 (6lb 10) wore them for a month, then newborn till she was 3 months old. dd2 wore them for about 2 weeks then straight into newborn. they were plain white sleepsuits and very cheap so worth it imo Smile

No, I wouldn't buy any small baby they most likely wont fit or will fit for a week.

If you're already 36 weeks you aren't going to have a tiny preemie so you can be pretty certain baby will be 6lb+ when born.

Your baby wont be able to walk, so having the legs a wee bit long won't matter, he/she isnt going to trip on them :) and so what if you have to roll the sleeves up for a few weeks?

Newborn size fit for so little time anyway that lots of people go straight to 0-3 (I am but baby estimated to be 9lb) so I certainly wouldn't get tiny baby.

I found mine wasn't in newborn for 5 mins before going into 0-3 months. My DS was 8.2 and new born was fine, I'd rather it a little bigger & comfy.

Have about 3/4 newborn baby grows for current brewing baby, then 0-3, they will grow into them if nothing else. If your baby is really tiny & drowns in newborn, you can always send a DH to get smaller if nec

HeidiHole · 30/04/2012 14:16

I think newborn clothes are about 5-9lb arent they?

If your baby was going to be less than 5lb at full term i'm sure they'd have picked it up by now or they'll certainly pick it up from your scan tomorrow

I am 32 weeks with my first. I have bought a pack of newborn white sleep suits in newborn think there were 5 in pack. Think I have about 8 newborn vests. One blue babygro, one pair of super cute dungarees which I couldn't resist and another soft outfit for coming home in. Rest I have is 0-3 months although these seems to vary in size so some may fit very quickly. Once we know what size ds is once he is born dh can go out and get more in whatever size needed. There is a next 2 mins from the hospital and we live only few minutes from a 24 hour huge tesco so easy to get more of the basics.

familyfun · 30/04/2012 14:36

newborn are norm upto 12lb, both my dds were 3 months old before wearing 0-3 month clothes.

flipflopper · 30/04/2012 15:04

I would buy newborn, not tiny baby to take into hospital if you are not expecting a tiny baby.
However, having said that, dd was born at 41 weeks at 5lb 3oz, which was a complete surprise, as the midwife predicted she would be 7lb+, so they really can't say accurately. Having said that, it is unlikely.
When I had ds, i took in tiny baby clothes, expecting the same again, and he weighed 8lb2oz, so they were far too small!

sharond101 · 30/04/2012 17:21

Thank you will not buy any small baby then. Panic over on to next panic now.....

DS was 6lb 5oz and newborn clothes hung off him! Still I would take newborn clothes to hospital. It doesn't matter if your baby has extra room at the feet and you can roll sleeves up.

Chunkychicken · 01/05/2012 11:14

My DD was also 6lb 5oz at birth so newborn clothes seemed huge on her too. I didn't know she was a she until birth, so had bought lots of neutral bits. Anything I bought for her as a girl or was bought for her was bought in the size she needed afterwards, so that meant some things were small baby size then (especially if from Mothercare as they seem HUGE).

I would say get newborn size but don't go mad, as s/he might only be in them for 5mins before you need a different size. People like to buy clothes as presents too, so you might be able to supplement their wardrobe that way!! :)

I was given some small baby stuff but gave it away in hospital cos was tiny on ds, 7lb 1oz.

DiffedAgainDachs · 01/05/2012 15:18

DD was 7lb7oz and newborn was enormous on her. First thing DH had to do when we got home was go to Mothercare and buy some small baby - she looks a lot comfier than she did in the newborn stuff. I was worried she'd not get much wear out of the newborn stuff and that maybe I should just have got 0-3 months, but she's 15 days old today and still in small baby...

blackteaplease · 01/05/2012 15:21

Go with newborn to hospital, you can always send a family member to get some early baby clothes if you do have a small baby.

DD was 8lb 8 and in 0-3 after 2 weeks, whereas 2 of my friends had 6lb babies and had to use early baby.
