How often are we supposed to see midwife? So confused!

So confused! I'm currently 26 weeks. I last saw her at 16 weeks and I'm sure she said the next visit should be with my GP, not her, at 26 weeks? Is this right, or have I just made it up? We've got THE most horrible, rude receptionists at our GP, so I don't want to call and have to have it out with them if I've got it wrong...

Also, I haven't missed any appointments have I? I've just been looking online at 'what to expect at 26 weeks' various sites, and have found the suggestion that I should expect TEN visits over the course of pregnancy, including several (such as for glucose test) between 16 and 26 weeks?! Have I been missing appointments?! Again, so confused!

Help!

Ours when we saw her at 16 weeks said she'd see us (I think) at 26 or 28.

Tbh I really do think we should have more visits as feel a bit out of touch and unprepared as nice as our mw is!

MeconiumHappens · 28/04/2012 17:30

should be seeing midwife or gp (if yours do shared care) at 16, 25, 28, 31, 34, 36, 38, 40 and 41 if your first pregnancy.

MeconiumHappens · 28/04/2012 17:31

glucose test and bloods are done at 28 weeks usually,. so you havent missed those

londonmackem · 28/04/2012 17:33

Would only need glucose test if you are high risk. There is a schedule in my maternity notes but this is mt second and they don't want to see me much at all!

iloveholidays · 28/04/2012 19:05

I understood it as MeconiumHappens has said - think they drop the 25 week and 31 week appointment in 2nd and subsequent pregnancies unless there are complications.

Is it your first pregnancy? If it is then should have 10 appointments, all mine are with midwife, Gps here dont get involved at all. I saw her at 16 weeks have scan at 20 weeks then see her at 24 weeks then 28 weeks as meconiumhappens says above.

Trickle · 28/04/2012 19:30

here you have an appt at 24 weeks with either your GP or consultant, if it's with a consultant it's booked for you, if it's with the GP you need to make it yourself.

babbashouse · 28/04/2012 22:18

Yes, first pregnancy. Looks like I'll have to face the dreaded receptionists next week to try and get something in the book then...

I have an appointment checklist from my NHS trust. It changed half way through so I had missed one appointment. So after the 20 week scan and if it is first baby I have 25 weeks, 28, 31, 34, 36, 38, 40 and 41 if baby hasn't made an appearance. All of these are at my GP surgery but with the community midwife. I have a friend who is consultant led though and for all of these appointments she has to go to the hospital.

Wow how strange that care varies so much from place to place!!!! Sorry your not being followed up OP must be so worrying for you, I do think the guidelines now are so scarce you spend a long time between appointments worrying about things. Where I am the MW works from the GP surgery and she books your next appointment there and then, writes it in your book and that's that :) Maybe when you get to see her ask her to book your next one in so you know where your at :)

footflapper · 29/04/2012 07:51

I was the same as you! I was really confused by the gp appt & didn't have one in the end. Woops!

DizzyKipper · 29/04/2012 08:19

I think it probably varies depending on your location. My midwife set a schedule of visits at 10, 16, 24, 28, 31, 34, 36, 38, 39, and 40 weeks. I've had all my appointments with the midwife though, even when having bloods taken. Do you have the midwife's number? If so I'm sure she wouldn't mind a quick phone call to query when your next appointment should be and who with. Ideally you should just make the appointments at the end of every session and get it written in your book, that's what I do.

WhenDoISleep · 29/04/2012 08:24

What do your pregnancy notes say? There is normally a list of the routine apointments in the front of your notes and the MW that you saw at 16 weeks should have written something on the notes she made at that visit to indicate when the next appt should be and who with.

handsarefull · 29/04/2012 08:53

I've seen my midwife twice booking in and 16wks won't be seeing her again until 28wks not seen doc apart from to get pregnancy confirmed but it is my 3rd. Have look in your notes as they normally put a list of wks when you should see someone also last time you saw midwife they normally write in next contact at ... With doc/midwife
